Aureos are seeking a Senior High Voltage Cable Design Engineer to join our growing team in Manchester.
The Senior High Voltage Cable Design Engineer will report to the Principal Engineer/Managing Director and will be responsible for ensuring high quality output, control of technical documents.
Key Responsibilities
Production of all designs, calculations, reports & drawings associated with the new or modification of HV cabling projects; This will cover the production of bonding/line diagrams, cable rating calculations, induced voltage calculations, short circuit force calculations, thermo-mechanical thrust calculations, cable pulling tension calculations, feasibility studies, production of material specification lists, cable thermal analysis and cable project engineering.
In this role, you are expected to meet project deadlines, manage both project and client expectations, and attend project design, and hazard review meetings in accordance with the project schedule. You will also be responsible for conducting a thorough review process for the drawings developed by the CAD technicians. You will also have involvement in bids and tenders for future work.

This role can lead to future opportunities to progress to principal engineer, and potentially a senior manager within the business.
Education & Knowledge
Essential:
- BEng/Bsc/Msc in Electrical & Electronical Engineering, Power systems or related field – or equivalent qualifications and experience
Desirable:
- Relevant certifications in electrical engineering; Working towards or willing to work towards CEng status. Working towards or willing to work towards SR137 CDAE

- Current ratings (IEC60287)
- Forced ventilation design for cable tunnels
- Impressed voltage calculations
- Emergency, Cyclic & Short-term overload ratings
- Cable crossing ratings
- Producing Bonding diagrams
- Producing Material Schedules & Technical specifications
- Thermo-mechanical design calculation
- Effective thermal resistivity calculations
- Induced voltage calculations
- Cable pulling tension calculations
- Short circuit current rating and electromagnetic force calculations
- Producing Joint bay, trench, CSE, cable routing designs (concept & detailed)
- SVL (Sheath Voltage Limiter) sizing
- EMF plots
- Route layouts & trench cross sections
- Earthing & bonding designs
Key Responsibilities and Requirements
- Prepare, review, and approve feasibility studies, technical reports, and design documents.
- Design, verify, and approve detailed allocation and construction design drawings.
- Develop and validate design concepts, drawings, specifications, and other technical documentation.
- Conduct a site visit to review the cable route and joint bay locations.
- Manage engineering teams and external suppliers to ensure project success.
- Ensure timely delivery of work within scope, budget, and specifications.
- Participate in Design & HAZID (Hazards in Design) reviews as required.
- Maintain and control documents and drawings in compliance with AS Design & Engineering Ltd. management procedures.
- Oversee design input/output within the designated risk management process.
- Establish team-specific standards to ensure consistency and quality.
- Support the professional development of CAD technicians.
- Take ownership of assigned tasks and responsibilities within agreed job boundaries.
- Provide regular programme updates to Lead Engineers throughout the project lifecycle.
- Identify and highlight potential quality and delivery risks.
- Act as a technical liaison with third parties.
- Demonstrate a strong understanding of IEC & Cigre standards.
- Proficiency in software such as CYMCAP and COMSOL
- Familiarity with client-specific technical specifications from National Grid, SSE, Scottish Power, NGED, RWE, UKPN, ENWL, etc.
- Strong computer skills, including report writing and documentation.
- Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
- A proactive attitude towards learning new skills and applying existing expertise to new challenges.
- Competence in creating and formatting high-quality drawings for contractors, suppliers, and fabricators.
