Role Overview
We are seeking an experienced Senior Mechanical Craftsperson to support the delivery of mechanical works.
The role will primarily involve the installation, modification, maintenance and removal of mechanical pipework and containment, including freshwater and general service systems.
The successful candidate will be experienced in working with a range of pipework materials, including carbon steel, ductile iron, concrete‑lined pipework, and stainless steel, together with associated valves, fittings, supports and containment systems.
The role will require a high level of workmanship, attention to detail and the ability to work safely within a controlled and operational environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Carry out mechanical pipefitting, installation and modification work.
- Install, modify, repair and maintain freshwater, domestic water and general service pipework systems.
- Work with a range of pipework materials including carbon steel, ductile iron, concrete‑lined pipework and stainless steel.
- Install and modify associated valves, flanges, fittings, strainers, drains, vents and mechanical components.
- Install pipe supports, brackets, mechanical containment, pipe racks and associated support steelwork.
- Undertake pipework diversions, alterations, extensions, and tie‑ins to existing systems.
- Carry out general pipework removals, including redundant and decommissioned services.
- Undertake controlled dismantling and removal of existing pipework, valves, supports and associated mechanical equipment.
- Carry out system isolation, draining, preparation and making‑safe activities prior to pipework modifications or removal.
- Carry out pipe cutting, preparation, jointing, bolting, flange assembly, and mechanical connections.
- Undertake installation of stainless‑steel and other specialist pipework systems in accordance with approved drawings and specifications.
- Carry out freshwater pipework installation, including connections to existing systems and associated valves and fittings.
- Undertake pressure testing, leak testing, flushing, and commissioning activities as required.
- Identify and report defects, corrosion, leaks, damaged pipework, and other mechanical issues.
- Read and interpret mechanical drawings, pipework isometrics, layouts, specifications, and site instructions.
- Accurately measure, set out, and install pipework and containment to required tolerances.
- Coordinate works with electrical, civil, and other mechanical trades to ensure effective installation and avoid clashes.
- Support planned and reactive maintenance activities associated with mechanical pipework systems.
- Assist supervisors and engineers with site surveys, setting out and constructability requirements.
- Provide practical guidance and support to other mechanical craft personnel and apprentices.
- Ensure all works are completed in accordance with approved RAMS, permits, drawings, specifications, inspection and test plans and quality requirements.
- Maintain high standards of housekeeping and ensure work areas are left safe and secure.
- Complete relevant installation, inspection, testing, and handover documentation.
Skills & Experience
- Extensive experience in mechanical pipefitting and industrial pipework installation.
- Proven experience working with carbon steel, ductile iron, concrete‑lined pipework and stainless steel.
- Experience of freshwater/domestic water and general service pipework systems.
- Competent in pipework installation, jointing, flange assembly, and mechanical connections.
- Experience of pipework removals, modifications, diversions, and tie‑ins to existing systems.
- Ability to interpret mechanical drawings, pipework isometrics, and specifications.
- Experience installing pipe supports, brackets, containment and associated mechanical infrastructure.
- Experience working within a live operational, industrial, or highly controlled environment.
- Previous Defence, Dockyard, Marine, Industrial or Nuclear experience would be advantageous.
- Strong understanding of health, safety, quality, and environmental requirements.
- Ability to work independently and provide practical leadership to other craft personnel.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Recognised mechanical engineering/pipefitting apprenticeship or equivalent trade experience.
- Relevant mechanical trade qualification preferred.
- Appropriate site safety qualifications.
- Ability to obtain and maintain the required Devonport Dockyard security clearance/access.
- Relevant additional qualifications such as confined space, hot works, lifting/rigging, or MEWP would be advantageous.
- Senior Craft Responsibilities
As a Senior Mechanical Craftsperson, the individual will be expected to demonstrate leadership and technical competence on site, providing support and guidance to other craft personnel while working closely with the Mechanical Supervisor and wider project team.
The role will require the individual to identify potential installation issues, raise constructability concerns, work proactively with supervision and engineering teams, and ensure that mechanical works are delivered safely, efficiently and to the required quality standards.
