Position Overview

Senior Facade Designer to lead the delivery of engineering design projects from initial concept through to practical completion across various sectors including commercial, healthcare, retail, industrial, education, hospitality, leisure, and specialist environments. The role involves leading project meetings, liaising with clients and multidisciplinary teams, and producing detailed designs and specifications that align with project timelines and construction programmes.

Responsibilities

  • Lead medium scale projects.
  • Act independently to investigate solutions, explore options, and develop and communicate design solutions with partners and peers.
  • Interpret the client brief and assist in preparing designs at all stages from scheme through to detail.
  • Attend Design Team meetings with clients and other design collaborators, and communicate design ideas through sketches, models, and presentations.
  • Produce concept sketches, detailed designs, calculations and reports in accordance with project programmes.
  • Liaise with other disciplines and ensure coordination of design and detailing work appropriate to the project.
  • Review and evaluate design deliverables to advise on compliance with specifications and industry guidance/standards.
  • Coordinate with project teams to resolve project related issues and ensure deliverables are met.
  • Maintain internal document control of drawings.
  • Produce and edit specifications to clarify the technical requirements of the design.
  • Review facade contractor’s tender returns and design submissions.
  • Witness testing of facade systems.
  • Undertake factory visits and site inspections.
  • Respond to client requests for information.
  • Facilitate and organise meetings and CPD training events as appropriate to contribute to personal and team development.

Required Skills

  • Experience leading projects during the different RIBA Design Stages and Construction.
  • Experience presenting ideas to Architects, Clients, and Contractors in meetings.
  • Sketching – ability to communicate ideas and develop concepts using hand sketches.
  • Design/Detailing – competence in 2D and 3D CAD software.
  • Building Physics – understanding of thermal performance, condensation risk, etc., and how they are applied in facade design.
  • Structure – understanding of structural mechanics as applied in facade design; software knowledge preferred (Strand, Autodesk Robot, SJ Mepla).
  • Knowledge of materials, systems and installation techniques.
  • Report writing – ability to compile well written text with suitable images.
  • Ability to understand and react to design changes and budget constraints.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Relevant degree (Facade Engineering, Architecture, Building Engineering, Structural Engineering, etc.) and preferably a relevant postgraduate degree.
  • Significant relevant experience in a similar role.
  • Working knowledge of BS/EN and International standards.
  • A rounded knowledge of the engineering aspects of facade design and construction.
  • Strong written, verbal and sketching communication skills.
  • A collaborative approach.
  • Ability to work under pressure and to deadlines.
