Role
This is a great entry-level opportunity for someone looking to get into their first Actuarial role.
- Reserving
- Support the quarterly reserving process under supervision including:
- Data preparation and validation
- Performing first cuts of the reserving analysis
- Basic analysis of movements and results
- Assisting with quarterly reserving documentation and presentation of results.
- Work with senior team members to address queries from the underwriting, claims and finance teams.
- Assist with deep dives to review reserving assumptions and projections for certain classes within property, casualty and specialty divisions.
- Support the team in the setup of analytics and trend analysis to aid reserving reviews and provide useful management information.
- Learn how to apply the standard reserving techniques and methodologies used by the team.
- Reserve Uncertainty
- Assist in the assessment of reserve uncertainty for all lines of business.
- This includes aiding the team in modelling and parameterisation of reserve risk within the Syndicate capital model.
- Technical Provisions
- Assist in the calculation of the technical provisions, working alongside senior actuaries in the team.
- Business Planning
- Play full part in actuarial team’s responsibility for reviewing business plans, helping to analyse the data to contribute to advising underwriting teams of anticipated levels of future profitability.
- General
- Support analysis of claims data including large losses.
- Liaise with Finance to ensure timely delivery and accurate completion of reporting to Lloyd’s and regulators.
- Provide support to senior members of the Actuarial Function for regular work and any ad hoc basis for particular projects where needed.
- Compliance
- Operate in line with actuarial standards and market practice where relevant.
- Compliance with Sarbanes-Oxley Control Framework including ensuring evidence of controls is maintained.
- Assist with responses to SAO provider and external audit concerning reserving process and outputs.
Skills required
- Degree in Mathematics or any other relevant subject is required.
- Highly numerate with financial awareness.
- Multi-disciplined, professional approach.
- Good interpersonal and communication skills.
- Committed to working towards achieving the Fellowship of the Institute of Actuaries (FIA) Qualification through ongoing exam progression.
- Good judgement skills regarding task prioritisation, delegation and resource allocation.
- Good IT skills and in particular, good knowledge of Microsoft Excel and competent user of ResQ or similar reserving software.
- No prior actuarial or insurance experience required, though relevant internships or placements are desirable.
