Job DescriptionThe Director, Applied Science plays a pivotal leadership role within the ATP Tour\’s Performance Support team as part of the Sporting Division. This role is responsible for overseeing all aspects of applied and performance sciences across the professional men\’s tennis circuit. The Director will set and drive the strategic direction and outcomes for the department and set up optimal systems and technology for data capture, storage, and the translation of data sources into practical applications that will assist in elevating athlete health, performance, and promote player longevity.

They will work closely with ATP players, their teams, tournament medical staff, data partners, and internal ATP departments, ensuring that science‐backed strategies are effectively embedded into daily operations of the Performance Support team as well as elite professional tennis. The position combines strategy, innovation, research translation, and cross‐functional execution across sports science, technology, and health performance domains.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership & Program Development

Lead the design, development, and implementation of a global performance data science framework tailored to the unique demands of the ATP Tour.

Identify priority areas for innovation in health monitoring, athlete performance, workload management, and recovery strategies.

Build strategic roadmaps for integrating new technologies and methodologies that optimise performance, reduce injury risk and build insights for increased fan engagement.

Data and Technology Integration

Oversee collection, analysis, and interpretation of athlete performance, workload, and health data.

Develop dashboards and insight tools that support athletes, coaches, and ATP staff in data‐informed decision‐making.

Act as liaison between ATP and technology/data providers, ensuring high standards of data quality, privacy, and operational value.

Applied Science Translation

Bridge the gap between academic research and on‐tour application, translating evidence‐based insights into tools, protocols, and education.

Lead pilot projects and applied research initiatives with partners, ensuring direct relevance to high‐performance tennis.

Collaboration & Stakeholder Engagement

Work closely with ATP tournament and tour medical teams to embed consistent performance science practices across events.

Build relationships with player teams (coaches, physios, trainers) to promote collaboration and trust in performance initiatives.

Partner with the ATP Medical Services, Player Relations and Tournament Relations to ensure alignment across player welfare priorities.

Monitoring & Evaluation

Establish key performance indicators (KPIs) and impact metrics to evaluate the effectiveness of Applied Science programs.

Ensure continuous learning through feedback loops, technology evaluations, and global best practice scanning.

Education & Experience

Master\’s or PhD in Sport Science, Exercise Physiology, Biomechanics, or a related field.

Minimum 7 years of experience in applied sport science roles, preferably within elite or professional sport settings.

Proven experience in using data and technology to drive performance and injury prevention strategies.

Familiarity with athlete management systems (e.g., Smartabase, Kitman, Fusion Sport, etc.), wearable tech, and performance analytics tools.

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build credibility and relationships across diverse global stakeholders.

Strong project management and organizational skills; able to manage multiple priorities in high‐pressure environments.

A passion for tennis and a deep understanding of the demands of high‐performance sport.

Skills & Competencies

Experience working within a global sporting organization or on an international competition circuit.

Strong scientific literacy with ability to critique and translate research.

Comfortable working in cross‐cultural, multilingual environments.

Ability to travel regularly and work flexible hours in line with the ATP Tour calendar.
