As a Unix/Linux Engineer, you will join the Infrastructure Operations team, supporting and evolving enterprise AIX and Linux platforms. You’ll play a key role in ensuring high availability, performance, and security across critical systems, while contributing to automation and modernization initiatives.

The core activities include:

  • Platform Management & Administration: Install, configure, and maintain AIX and Linux systems (RHEL, SUSE, Ubuntu). Manage system updates, patches, and lifecycle activities; perform system performance tuning, troubleshooting, and optimisation. Monitor system health, availability, and capacity using enterprise tools; manage user access and system reporting.
  • Infrastructure Operations: Maintain filesystems, volume management, and storage integration (e.g., LVM, ASM, SAN). Administer logical partitions (LPARs), VIOS, and PowerVM for AIX environments. Build and support server environments for on-prem and/or cloud-hosted workloads; provide 2nd/3rd line support for incidents and problems within SLAs.
  • Automation & Scripting: Develop and maintain automation scripts using Shell, Bash, Python, or Ansible. Support configuration management, infrastructure-as-code, and system standardisation.
  • Security & Compliance: Maintain OS security baselines, hardening, patching, and vulnerability remediation; support audit readiness and compliance frameworks (ISO27001, PCI-DSS, etc.).
  • Documentation & Process: Produce and maintain technical documentation, system designs, and procedures. Contribute to continuous improvement within the infrastructure function.
  • Project Involvement: Participate in infrastructure upgrades, migrations, and transformation initiatives. Work closely with cross-functional teams (network, storage, application, cloud).
  • Out of hours Requirements: Take part in an on-call rota as required. Provide occasional overtime support during planned or unplanned work.

Technical Skills:

  • Strong hands-on experience with IBM AIX administration, including: PowerVM, LPAR/VIOS management, NIM server administration, AIX patching and performance tuning.
  • Solid experience with Linux (RHEL preferred, but other enterprise distros accepted).
  • Proficiency in shell scripting (KSH, Bash) and automation (Ansible or similar).
  • Understanding of TCP/IP networking fundamentals, storage technologies (SAN, NAS, multipathing), backup/restore tools and DR procedures.
  • Experience working within enterprise server environments.

Education & Qualifications:

  • Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience). Professional certifications preferred but not required.
