Safety Specialist – Closing Date: 19th August 2026 – Location: RG7 4PR, between Reading and Basingstoke. This role requires working across AWE Aldermaston and AWE Burghfield sites. Due to the classified nature of the work, remote work options are limited.
Package: £36,340 and above, subject to suitability, qualifications, and experience. Working pattern: AWE operates a 9 day working fortnight. Flexible working arrangements can be requested.
Key Responsibilities
- Ensure company strategies, policies and management system requirements for conventional health & safety are communicated and understood.
- Maintain and promote high standards in Environment, Safety, Health, Security and Quality.
- Produce health & safety documentation for a project and/or portfolio.
- Support local ESH Improvement Plans (culture, communications, etc).
- Promote learning and improvement through briefings, toolbox talks and presentations.
Qualifications and Experience
- Level 3 qualification – e.g. NVQ Level 3 in Occupational Health & Safety, NEBOSH Construction Certificate, NEBOSH General Certificate or equivalent.
- Relevant experience managing safety within an engineering and manufacturing site.
- Experience in a high hazard environment, including safety advisory, investigation, inspection and emergency response.
- Experience in customer service‑related tasks and duties.
- Evidence of effective team working and the ability to work calmly and constructively in a changing priority environment.
- Good knowledge and ability to interpret relevant legislation.
- Initiative, enthusiasm, flexible approach and ability to work to tight deadlines.
- Computer literate (IT/IS).
- Commitment to ongoing professional development (e.g. IOSH affiliate or associate, TechIOSH, CPD).

Requirements
- British Citizen with at least five years’ residence in the UK for Security Clearance (SC). The role requires SC clearance, funded by AWE.
- Must be able and willing to work on site at both Aldermaston and Burghfield.
