About the Team
Join SumUp's Mobile Platform Squad as a Senior Android Engineer and become a cornerstone of our rapidly expanding Android ecosystem. With significant investment in flagship products, we are empowering our feature teams to deliver world‑class experiences. You will be instrumental in building the robust foundation that enables over 40 Android engineers to operate with maximum productivity and efficiency, directly shaping the future of mobile payments for millions of merchants. This role is critical to:
- Eliminating Bottlenecks: Strategically addressing and resolving critical bottlenecks in CI/CD pipelines and app infrastructure that could impede the delivery of new features and improvements.
- Elevating Developer Experience: Architecting and implementing cutting‑edge tools and infrastructure that drastically enhance the developer experience, reduce build times, and streamline workflows for our large Android engineering team.
- Modernizing a Mature Codebase: Driving the evolution and improvement of our Android codebase, focusing on code simplicity, maintainability, and overall health across all SumUp Android products.
- Ensuring Product Stability & Scalability: Providing foundational support and guidance across our diverse Android product portfolio, ensuring consistency, reliability, and seamless operation for Register, Android Terminal, SumUp Go, and the Merchant app.
What you’ll do
- Strategic Impact: Lead the charge in shaping the core experience for both merchants and our internal Android developers, directly contributing to SumUp's ambitious Android product roadmap.
- Technical Leadership: Architect, develop, and maintain critical tools, frameworks, and infrastructure that significantly enhance the consistency, scalability, and reliability of our mobile apps, ensuring no negative impact across our distinct Android products.
- Performance & Efficiency: Spearhead initiatives in CI/CD systems, advanced developer tooling, and performance optimizations to dramatically streamline mobile development processes and reduce build times for our growing team.
- Codebase Evolution: Proactively tackle technical debt, improve code health, and introduce best practices to a complex, mature codebase, ensuring its longevity and adaptability.
- Mentorship & Collaboration: Provide invaluable technical guidance and mentorship, fostering a culture of excellence and knowledge sharing across our Android engineering chapter, often navigating legacy components and unknown technologies.
- End-to-End Ownership: Own critical technical projects from ideation through to successful implementation and impact measurement, ensuring they align with strategic business needs and uphold the highest technical standards.
You’ll be great for this position if you have:
- Deep Android Expertise: 5+ years of professional Android development experience, with a proven track record in Kotlin and modern Android frameworks.
- CI/CD Mastery: Extensive experience with CI/CD pipelines (e.g., GitHub Actions, Fastlane) and a passion for solving build time challenges and improving deployment efficiency at scale.
- Architectural Acumen: A deep understanding of testing methodologies, modern architecture, and design patterns, coupled with a strategic mindset to balance immediate needs with long‑term architectural vision.
- Developer-Centric Passion: A genuine passion for developer experience, with a history of creating impactful tools and improving workflows for large engineering teams.
