This may be in mass transit systems, high-speed rail lines or in highway tunnels.

As a tunnel ventilation engineer, you will:

  • Design and analyse tunnel ventilation systems for both normal and emergency operations.
  • Assess the related elements such as fire and life safety systems following client specifications and worldwide standards.
  • Work on a range of underground facilities and tunnels, including metro systems, railway stations, road tunnels, cable tunnels and more.
  • Plan, design and install ventilation systems for tunnel projects.
  • Ensure tunnels are safe through various systems.
  • Plan and oversee commissioning, operation, refurbishment, and upgrade of tunnel infrastructure.
  • Conduct on-site inspection and performance testing of tunnel ventilation systems.
  • Apply fluid mechanics and thermodynamics for fire and ventilation modelling.
  • Implement fire safety engineering, risk analysis and evacuation analysis.

We are looking for:

  • Good experience in engineering road and rail tunnel ventilation design, fire and life-safety design, gained in road, rail and/or metro tunneling schemes.
  • Excellent technical skills and numeracy skills acquired during your academic background.
  • Understanding of fire dynamics, heat transfer and smoke behaviour principles in enclosed environments.
  • Advanced user of 1D design tools such as IDA for Road and SES for rail.
  • Computational Fluid Dynamics modelling and visualisation using programs such as FDS, Pyrosis and Smoke view or others.
  • Movement Modelling Analysis evacuation and crowd simulations using computational models such as Pathfinder.
  • Up to date knowledge of current legislation and standards applicable in tunnel ventilation design.
  • Demonstrating technical expertise, providing in-depth knowledge whilst proactively coaching and developing graduate/early career professionals.
  • High motivation to succeed, and to progress and develop your career.
  • Personality compatible with a high degree of collaborative and teamwork in multi-disciplinary and international projects.
  • Communication and writing skills which can produce clear and concise reports or presentations.
