Overview
Asset Health is an increasingly important priority for infrastructure owners.
Ageing assets, evolving regulatory expectations, affordability pressures and the need for greater operational resilience require organisations to improve how they understand asset condition, criticality, reliability, performance and future risk.
Atkins Réalis is developing an integrated Asset Health capability that brings together engineering expertise, operational understanding, asset management, information management, analytics and digital innovation.
The capability will help clients establish a consistent view of current and future asset health, understand the consequences of deterioration and failure, and identify the operational, maintenance and investment interventions needed to manage risk and improve performance.
We are seeking an established technical and commercial leader to build and grow this capability across our Water, Defence, Energy and Aviation markets.
This is an opportunity to set the direction of a strategically important service line, influence our market offering and help clients make better-informed operational, maintenance and investment decisions.
Your role
- As Technical Director, Asset Health, you will establish and lead our Asset Health service line within the Infrastructure Asset & Information Management Practice.
- You will set its strategic and technical direction, develop a focused portfolio of commercially viable services and establish the methods, governance and delivery approaches required to provide consistent, high-quality outcomes for clients.
- Working with our practice, market and account leaders, you will identify client priorities, shape opportunities and convert demand into secured work.
You will provide senior leadership on client engagements, major bids and strategically important commissions.
- The role extends beyond individual tools, analytical methods or Asset Health Indices.
You will ensure that our approach provides clients with a defensible line of sight from asset evidence and future risk to prioritised interventions and investment decisions.
You will connect evidence about asset condition, criticality, reliability and performance with practical operational, maintenance and investment decisions.
- Initially, this will be a service line, technical and commercial leadership role rather than one involving the management of a large, established team.
You will develop the capability and supporting team as demand and secured work grow.
You will
- Own and implement the strategy and roadmap for our Asset Health service line across Water, Defence, Energy and Aviation.
- Define a focused portfolio of distinctive and commercially viable services that responds to clients' operational, maintenance and investment priorities.
- Set the technical direction for our Asset Health capability and lead the development and continuous improvement of its methods, governance and assurance arrangements, including approaches to condition, criticality, deterioration, performance and future risk.
- Work with market, account and practice leaders to identify, shape and convert strategic client opportunities.
- Bring technical authority and commercial judgement to senior client conversations, major bids and strategically important commissions.
- Lead complex multidisciplinary assignments as Technical Director, Project Director, senior adviser or assurance lead.
- Build trusted relationships with senior clients, asset owners, operators and industry stakeholders.
- Establish an active Asset Health community and develop the people, partnerships and reusable methods needed to support sustainable growth.
About you
You will be an established leader in Asset Health, asset management, asset performance, maintenance, reliability, infrastructure operations or a closely related discipline.
You will have
- Extensive senior-level experience gained within infrastructure consultancy, an asset-intensive organisation or a closely related environment.
- A strong understanding of Asset Health and its relationship with condition, criticality, reliability, maintenance, operational performance, risk and investment planning.
- Experience of establishing, leading or materially growing a technical service, proposition or capability, with evidence of resulting client demand, secured work or improved market position.
- A successful record of identifying, shaping and converting business development opportunities, including major bids or strategic proposals.
- Experience of directing complex multidisciplinary assignments and providing senior technical assurance.
- Strong commercial judgement, balancing client outcomes, technical quality, delivery risk and financial performance across both work winning and delivery.
- The credibility to build trusted relationships with senior clients, stakeholders and business leaders.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to turn complex technical evidence into clear decisions and practical recommendations.
- A degree in engineering, asset management or a related discipline, or equivalent relevant professional experience, is required.
Chartered status or an equivalent recognised professional qualification would be advantageous.
Desirable experience
Experience in one or more of the following would be beneficial
- Water, Defence, Energy or Aviation.
- Asset Health Indices, condition assessment or criticality assessment.
- Reliability engineering, deterioration modelling or maintenance optimisation.
- Asset Performance Management or risk-based investment planning.
- Regulated, safety-critical or security-sensitive infrastructure.
- We recognise that strong candidates may bring different combinations of these capabilities. We do not expect one person to be a specialist in every area.
- Your initial priorities
- Your initial focus will be to bring together the Asset Health expertise, tools, methods and client credentials that already exist across Atkins Réalis and develop them into a coherent, technically robust and client-facing capability.
You will identify where existing approaches can be standardised, improved or supplemented and establish a clear technical development roadmap.
- You will define the priority propositions, establish the technical and delivery framework, shape an initial opportunity pipeline and lead or assure early reference commissions.
As demand grows, you will develop the practitioner community, partnerships and supporting team required to create a scalable and sustainable service.
- Success will be demonstrated through a recognised market proposition, a sustainable pipeline of secured work, successful client outcomes and growing demand for our services.
