Senior Maritime Safety Consultant at AtkinsRéalis
As a Senior Maritime Safety Consultant you will play a pivotal role in large‑scale, high‑profile infrastructure projects and smaller niche consultancy assignments across the aerospace, defence, security and technology sector. You will be based from any ADS&T UK office with some UK travel as required.
Your role
- Support safety assurance across complex naval platforms, ensuring MOD and international safety standards compliance.
- Develop and maintain safety cases for ships and submarines, including hazard logs, risk assessments and ALARP justifications.
- Guide junior engineers, review safety documentation and provide technical safety input to bids and proposals.
- Engage with stakeholders within DE&S/SDA, naval operators and suppliers to understand and meet safety requirements.
- Support design and engineering decisions, identify safety implications and recommend risk mitigation strategies.
- Contribute to safety management systems, ensuring continual improvement and alignment with MOD and industry best practices.
- Deliver technical training packages on safety engineering principles, tools and processes.
- Conduct independent safety audits and assessments, providing expert advice and assurance to senior leadership.
- Support Platform certification by the Naval Authority Technical Group.
Essential – About you
- Maritime safety practitioner with broad knowledge of surface ships/submarines.
- Knowledge of Defence Maritime Regulations.
- Experience in safety engineering within defence, maritime or high‑hazard industries.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
- Proficiency with safety tools and techniques such as FMEA, HAZOP, Fault Tree Analysis and Bowtie analysis.
- A proactive, analytical mindset with the ability to spearhead, mentor and drive safety culture across teams.
Desirable
- Chartered Engineer status or working towards it with a recognised professional body.
- Experience of quality control activities for safety documentation.
- Experience applying defence safety regulations (e.g., DSA02 DMR, IEC 61508, JSP 815).

Security clearance
This role may require security clearance. Offers of employment will be dependent on obtaining the relevant level of clearance, discussed during interview. The vetting process is delivered by the UK Security Vetting (UKSV) and may require proof of UK residency for 5+ years.
