As an experienced groundwater modelling specialist you will deliver projects across the UK, working closely with technical leads based in Birmingham, Epsom, Oxford and Peterborough. You will champion high standards of performance and influence project development while leading on bids and mentoring junior staff.

Responsibilities

  • Work with technical leads to win, deliver and manage a portfolio of groundwater modelling projects and build trusted client relationships.
  • Champion high standards of performance, influence project development and lead on projects and bids as appropriate.
  • Undertake your own work to an excellent standard, defining and delivering outputs for a range of projects including complex problem solving.
  • Collaborate closely with the groundwater resources team, mentor and support junior staff, and provide training on aspects of modelling.
  • Extend your expertise to other hydrogeological assessments and water resources modelling applications beyond groundwater modelling.
  • Deliver a range of groundwater and surface water supply projects, strategic planning, resource optimisation and environmental assessment.
  • Build, develop and update conceptual and numerical groundwater models at a regional scale and assess abstraction impacts on the environment for water companies and regulators.
  • Apply or develop UK regional groundwater models and undertake WINEP investigations, pumping tests, borehole design, groundwater flooding and water resource planning.
  • Apply MODFLOW (ideally including MODFLOW6) and recharge models such as 4R or SWAc.
  • Demonstrate coding skills in Python, R, Fortran, VBA or similar and GIS proficiency.
  • Develop new and innovative approaches to advance digital tools and keep abreast of emerging technologies.
  • Lead projects through the life‑cycle of problem definition, data collection, analysis, interpretation of results and concise recommendations.
  • Communicate effectively at all levels, build high‑quality client relationships and deliver clear reports.
  • Maintain a valid full UK driving licence.

This role is open across multiple UK locations; the team is flexible with location.

Qualifications

  • Degree in science, engineering or mathematics and a post‑graduate qualification in hydrogeology or a related subject, likely chartered through a relevant professional body.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of groundwater modelling for water resources, including building and updating regional conceptual and numerical models and assessing abstraction impacts.
  • Experience developing or using UK regional groundwater models.
  • Wider experience in hydrogeology and hydrology including WINEP investigations, signal and pumping tests, borehole design, groundwater flooding and water resource planning.
  • Good understanding of UK hydrogeology and the environmental and regulatory framework of UK water management.
  • Expertise in MODFLOW (including MODFLOW6) and other groundwater flow models, recharge models such as 4R or SWAc.
  • Desirable coding ability in Python, R, Fortran, VBA or similar, and GIS skills.
  • Motivation to continue developing skills and keep up with new technologies.
  • Project leadership experience through the full project life‑cycle, including modelling and report writing.
  • Excellent numerical, analytical, report‑writing and presentational skills with an eye for detail.
  • High motivation, proactivity and the ability to communicate effectively at all levels.
  • Valid full UK driving licence.
