AtkinsRéalis Building Design Practice is looking to appoint a Fire Engineer who is eager to further develop their career within a forward‐thinking, multi‐sector practice. The role involves working as part of a national practice of design professionals delivering fire engineering design solutions to clients across a wide variety of sectors, including Cities & Development, Commercial, Energy, Residential and Transportation.
There is flexibility around where the role is based; while the majority of the current Fire Engineering team are based in Derby and London, we aspire to grow teams in the North and Southwest. Preferred UK locations: Bristol, Epsom, Glasgow, London or Derby.
As a Principal Fire Engineer, you will take responsibility for your own projects but also work collaboratively with other senior team members to develop the team and strengthen technical capability.
Your Role
- Work in a range of sectors from residential buildings through to rail transportation or new energy facilities.
- Manage multiple engineering projects from inception through to delivery in support of fire safety standards and codes.
- Support the delivery of project work within time and cost budgets, keeping up to date with regulations and legislation.
- Develop fire engineering solutions on projects and ensure the fire engineering strategy is delivered.
- Assess fire‐related risks in projects and work collaboratively to mitigate where possible.
- Develop and support junior engineers.
- Review and comment on the quality of fire safety related installations.
- Undertake tenders for new work and develop client relationships with existing clients.
- Lead medium‐sized projects on a day‐to‐day basis.
- Prepare and review reports, and lead fire engineering workshops.
About You
- Engineering degree, preferably in fire engineering, or alternatively a postgraduate qualification in fire engineering (candidates from other backgrounds are also considered).
- Demonstrated a strong record of successfully delivering fire safety projects – experience in other sectors is strongly considered.
- Experience working with a range of fire standards including BS9999, NFPA 130, BS9992, EN45545 is beneficial.
- Fire modelling experience is beneficial; experience outside the building sector is advantageous.
- Ability to obtain security clearance, ideally without caveats, would be highly beneficial.
- Associate membership of the IFE, working towards full membership.
- A flexible approach to the working environment and working towards Chartership.
- Willingness to travel will be a positive advantage.
- Good commercial awareness and a customer‐focused mindset.
- Ability to collate information and have a clear and structured approach to report writing.

Additional Information – Security Clearance
This role may require security clearance and offers of employment will be dependent on obtaining the relevant level of clearance. If this is necessary, it will be discussed with you at interview. The vetting process is delivered by United Kingdom Security Vetting (UKSV) and may require candidates to provide proof of residency in the UK of 5 years or longer.
