The Lead Civil Engineer is overall responsible for managing the substation civil engineering, construction and contracting activities, from early project engagement through to construction. Starting with tendering activities together with Sales and ending with the hand-over to the service department or client, ensuring high quality results in line with project timescales and budget.

Technical

  • Civil and structural design, ability to check and comment on civil documentation in accordance with contractual requirements of tenders/projects.
  • Knowledge of UK Building Market, Standards and Regulations.
  • To supervise, support and guide civil designers or resolve site technical queries, remedial works and snags.
  • To support CDM coordinator/Temporary works coordinator in the enactment of duties.
  • Contribute technical advice during the feasibility, design, construction and commissioning phases for projects to our direct labour force (Direct Services), framework contractors.
  • To liaise with civil designers or resolve site technical queries, remedial works and snags.

Project Management

  • Monitor, control, and report on progress (costs and budget throughout the project).
  • Investigate and develop cost-effective design and construction solutions.
  • Contribute to the development and the implementation of the client’s design guidance, standards and specifications.

Other Position-Specific Characteristics

  • Availability to travel 25% of the time (domestic/international travel).
  • Hybrid working arrangement with availability to attend site where required.

Experience Required

  • Extensive experience in developing project requirements, cost estimates, project plans and budgets within the construction industry (preferably on large multi-million dollar projects).
  • Civil and structural design, ability to check and comment on civil documentation, designs and calculations in accordance with contractual requirements of tenders/projects.
  • Assist in the negotiations and awarding of contracts.
  • Monitor, control, and report on progress (costs and budget throughout the project).
  • Resolve disputes, negotiate change orders, communicate decisions to client, subcontractors and management personnel.
  • Assess and provide technical evaluation of subcontractors and participate in tender activities, including the production of technical specifications and supporting documentation.
  • Knowledge of UK Transmission System Operators (TSO) and similar major utilities.
  • Chartered Engineer status or working towards it is desirable.

Education and Training Required

  • Bachelor or master's degree in civil engineering or another construction related area and a member of a recognised professional institution.
