We are seeking an Associate Structural Engineer and Team Lead to establish, grow and direct our structural engineering capability in Exeter. This is a key strategic appointment, offering the opportunity to build and shape a new team within an established multidisciplinary office while contributing to the continued growth of our Building Structures business across the Southwest and wider UK.
You will be a Chartered Civil or Structural Engineer with a proven track record of delivering building structures projects and steering teams. Working closely with clients, multidisciplinary colleagues and industry partners, you will provide technical guidance, drive project delivery and help develop practical, commercially successful solutions.
A strong understanding of the regional buildings market, or the ability to quickly develop a network across Exeter and the Southwest, will be important. You will play a key role in developing client relationships, identifying opportunities and supporting business growth through bid and tender activities.
Our Exeter office delivers multidisciplinary design, engineering and advisory services across sectors including education, commercial, residential, aviation, defence, energy, civil infrastructure and rail. Supported by an established regional and national Building Structures practice, you will have access to specialist expertise, a broad client base and diverse project opportunities, while having the platform to grow and lead a successful structural engineering team.
Your role
- Establish, develop and grow the structural engineering team in Exeter.
- Provide technical guidance and assurance across structural engineering projects.
- Steer the project and design management of multidisciplinary commissions, delivering agreed quality, programme and commercial outcomes.
- Review calculations, drawings, specifications and other technical deliverables.
- Develop the technical capability and career progression of engineers across the team.
- Foster a collaborative, inclusive and high-performing team culture.
- Identify opportunities and direct work-winning activities, including fee proposals, bids and tender submissions.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with existing and prospective clients.
About you
Essential
- Chartered Civil or Structural Engineer.
- Significant experience directing the delivery of building structures projects from concept through detailed design and construction.
- Strong technical knowledge across common structural materials, foundation design, structural assessment and relevant design standards.
- Demonstrable project, design and commercial management experience within an engineering consultancy.
- Experience spearheading, developing and motivating engineering teams.
- Strong client relationship, stakeholder management and communication skills.
- Experience guiding or making a significant contribution to work winning, fee proposals and bids.
- Ability to take ownership while working collaboratively across a multidisciplinary business.
