AtkinsRéalis’ Traffic Control Systems (TCS) team works across the transport sector, helping clients navigate a rapidly changing world by linking current Traffic Signals and Intelligent Transport Systems with future-focused technology opportunities. The team undertakes a variety of design, implementation, consultancy, and advisory projects for a broad set of UK and international clients in the transport sector, including the Department for Transport, National Highways, and UK local authorities.
The team sits within the Intelligent Transport & Infrastructure (ITI) practice, part of AtkinsRéalis' UK Transportation business, delivering data-driven solutions that improve transport network performance and outcomes for clients and communities. ITI comprises staff from various disciplines, with approximately 15 TCS staff providing market-leading capability in traffic signals, Urban Traffic Control (UTC), and operations.
TCS blends projects utilising traffic signals, motorway control systems, toll road systems, and smart ticketing with advice on emerging trends such as digital highways, Mobility-as-a-Service, Connected Vehicles, and AI.
As a Traffic Control Systems Engineer, you will be a key part of our dynamic team, delivering high-quality projects to clients across the UK. You will help improve people's journeys, promote safety, and work towards a more healthy and sustainable environment.
This role offers hybrid working from one of our offices in Bristol, Birmingham, Epsom, or Nottingham. There may be some development of schemes both across the UK and overseas, necessitating short-term travel.
Key areas of responsibility will include:
- Undertaking the successful delivery of Traffic Signal and ITS schemes from inception to operation, including detailed design, FAT, SAT, and validation.
- Liaison with clients to provide technical advice and solutions, develop opportunities, and progress project delivery.
- Assisting and guiding less experienced staff on technical delivery and project management.
- Delivering high-quality technical reports and presentations.
- Developing commercial knowledge and understanding, including preparation of cost estimates and scopes.
- Undertaking project management tasks, including monitoring budgets, raising project risks, and resolving issues.
- Working both as part of a team and individually, monitoring own project work and that of others to ensure delivery to budget, time, and quality.
About you
We’re looking for someone who is self-motivated, analytical, and enjoys problem-solving, with developing technical knowledge and enthusiasm for delivering projects in the traffic signals sector. You should have:
- Knowledge of design processes and best practices, traffic signals/highways design, and traffic signal operation.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to develop innovative solutions and processes.
- Proven ability to learn new skills, understand complex technical projects, and seek out new opportunities.
- Good communication skills, including presentations and client meetings, and effective at developing positive working relationships.
- Ability to deliver outputs on multiple projects for various clients.
- Strong awareness of Health and Safety issues and CDM.
- A desire to become a member of a relevant Professional Institute and obtain professional registration, with opportunities for personal development leading to Chartership.
