Tunnels and underground structures form an increasingly important part of modern‑day infrastructure. This infrastructure provides economic, societal, and environmental benefits through the facilitation of the efficient and rapid movement of people below‑ground. This may be in mass transit systems, high‑speed rail lines or in highway tunnels.

Your role:

  • Support delivery of Road and Rail tunnel ventilation projects and fire and life safety assessments.
  • Strengthen and expand our presence in the UK Road and Rail sector.
  • Assist in technical work and engagement with project teams and clients.
  • Support business activities, including bids and technical studies.
  • Work towards achieving professional chartership (e.g. CEng).

Project & Technical Delivery:

  • Support the design and assessment of tunnel ventilation systems.
  • Assist with 1D modelling (SES / IDA), CFD studies, and basic risk assessments.
  • Contribute to fire and life safety assessments and ventilation strategies.
  • Support commissioning activities, testing, and asset performance reviews.
  • Prepare technical reports and support production of client deliverables.

Business Growth & Client Engagement:

  • Support team activities to grow the UK and international market.
  • Assist in building relationships with clients in the rail and road sectors.
  • Contribute to identifying opportunities in tunnel ventilation and fire/life safety projects.
  • Support the preparation of bids and technical proposals.

Internal Capability Development:

  • Work collaboratively with senior engineers and wider teams.
  • Support continuous improvement of tools, methods, and best practices.
  • Engage in training and development to build technical capability.

About you:

  • Degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Civil, Aerospace or related discipline).
  • Working towards, or committed to achieving, professional chartership (e.g. CEng).
  • Understanding or interest in tunnel ventilation and fire/life safety.
  • Familiarity with SES / IDA Tunnel modelling tools and CFD tools (e.g. FDS, Pyrosim, Pathfinder).
  • Understanding of fundamental ventilation principles and airflow and fire and smoke behaviour.
  • Good communication and teamwork skills.
  • Experience with modelling or simulation tools in underground infrastructures.
  • Aware of relevant standards (e.g. NFPA, PIARC, UK guidance).
  • Interest in developing technical expertise in tunnel ventilation and fire safety.
