This position can be based at any of our main UK locations: Epsom, London, Bristol, Peterborough, Birmingham, Leeds, Manchester or Glasgow (and other offices). Responsibilities

  • Provide Technical Leadership in Bioresources Mechanical Engineering Design across the D&A Practice and wider AtkinsRealis business.
  • Represent your and AtkinsRealis' Bioresources Mechanical Engineering Design technical expertise to current and prospective clients.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders at all levels, including internal and external clients, operational staff, project teams, or external stakeholders.
  • Lead or form part of a team of Mechanical Engineers to deliver technical design work on complex multi‑disciplinary projects following relevant national and project specific design codes and standards.
  • Lead the development of project design deliverables for Bioresource and associated Waste Water Treatment Mechanical Engineering aspects of complex multi‑disciplinary projects, and work with the project management team to manage time, budgets and key milestones.
  • Manage production, review and approve technical deliverables such as design reports, drawings, calculations and scopes of work.
  • Influence D&A Practice wide initiatives and recommend best practices to improve internal processes and services.
  • Work closely with teams within AtkinsRealis providing strategic services, policy and regulation advice, operations and maintenance expertise to incorporate lessons learned.
  • Grow and develop the Bioresources Mechanical Engineering Design capability regionally and nationally, providing mentorship and occasional technical masterclasses.
  • Work independently with guidance in challenging situations, exercising personal judgement and providing guidance to junior team members.
  • Oversee technical input into bid proposals, defining the delivery strategy and working with cross‑functional teams to prepare high‑quality, compliant, competitive submissions.

Qualifications

  • Chartered Mechanical Engineer.
  • A degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
  • Proven experience in leading large‑scale Bioresources projects' Mechanical engineering design delivery within a multi‑disciplinary environment.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the design of mechanical equipment used in Bioresources treatment processes (e.g., pumps, thickeners, dewaterers, driers, mixers, heat systems, gas systems, advanced anaerobic digestion, ATC).
  • Expert understanding of integrated treatment processes and their impact on emissions, heat, pressure, and energy management.
  • Proven experience in leading elements in mechanical engineering design and integrating them within existing or new treatment processes.
  • Thorough understanding of current UK design codes and standards, relevant legislation and industry best practices (including CDM and DSEAR).
  • Strong communication skills, able to convey complex ideas clearly and persuade senior stakeholders across cultures.
  • Extensive experience designing and delivering projects that comply with UK safety and environmental regulations, process safety techniques (e.g., HAZOP), cost analysis and whole‑life carbon assessments.
  • Commercially astute, with experience shaping winning proposals and driving practice and business growth.
  • Experience in leading, coordinating or managing a mechanical engineering design delivery team on a project within a multi‑disciplinary environment.
  • Comprehensive knowledge across all design phases, including construction.
  • Highly motivated, collaborative mindset to drive teamwork and shared success across projects and the D&A practice.
  • Experienced in identifying and promoting innovative solutions; design experience in bringing first‑of‑a‑kind technology to construction and commissioning is advantageous.
  • Experience in the UK Water market is preferred.
