PE-Backed Group | Remote/Flexible | Salary £70,000-£75,000 + Benefits
OVERVIEW
AtkinsClarke are delighted to be supporting the appointment of a Financial Controller for a fast-growing, PE-backed funeral group operating across England.
This is a newly available role within a business that has grown rapidly through acquisition and continues to pursue an active pipeline of further deals. It offers an excellent opportunity for a qualified accountant to take ownership of Group financial control and reporting, while playing a genuine role in shaping the finance function as the business scales.
COMPANY
Our client is a private equity-backed group operating around 20 sites across England.
The business currently generates c£8m turnover and c.£2m EBITDA, with a clear growth trajectory targeting £10m EBITDA within 18 months, before doubling again over the following 18 months. An active acquisition pipeline is underway, with deals currently in due diligence and further opportunities in discussion.
The organisation takes a modern and flexible approach to acquiring, integrating and operating funeral homes, respectful of the legacies and traditions of each business while upholding the highest standards of care for clients and their families.
OPPORTUNITY
Reporting to the CFO, the Financial Controller will take ownership of financial control and reporting for the Group and its trading subsidiaries, while business partnering with subsidiary managers to drive commercial performance.
Key responsibilities include:
- Delivering month-end reporting with full reconciliation and variance analysis at group, subsidiary and branch level
- Owning the monthly management accounts process, including consolidated, subsidiary and branch P&Ls, balance sheet and cashflow
- Business partnering with group and subsidiary stakeholders to share financial performance and generate commercial insight
- Developing combined financial, commercial and operational reporting, including KPIs cut by branch, region and salesperson
- Managing and developing inherited bookkeeping teams into a coherent, discrete central finance function over time

- Leading cash flow forecasting and bank reporting
- Producing the annual budget and supporting long-range forecasting alongside the CFO
- Overseeing the annual audit process and maintaining a clear audit trail
- Building direct communication lines with the Group's investors

We are looking for a fully qualified, operationally-minded finance professional with a collaborative, people-first approach.
You will ideally demonstrate:
- Fully qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA or CIMA) - part-qualified candidates will not be considered
- Financial Controller-level experience, having completed at least one full budget cycle
- A background within a multi-site, operational business, rather than a purely corporate or fintech setting

- Strong people skills, with the ability to manage and support inherited and long-tenured teams through change
- Good technology skills, with experience of Xero advantageous
- Excellent communication skills, with the confidence to present and build trust with investors and senior stakeholders
- A warm, team-oriented personality alongside strong technical capability
