About the Role
This is a rare opportunity to sit at the heart of the senior leadership team, shaping financial strategy, driving performance and supporting the company’s ambitious growth plans. You’ll play a pivotal role in a small but expanding UK service business within an International Group. Working closely with the Managing Director and functionally to the Director of Finance abroad, you’ll take full ownership of the UK finance function.
As UK Business Finance Controller, you’ll lead a capable finance team while remaining hands-on with reporting, forecasting, controls and business partnering. You’ll ensure financial integrity, compliance with UK and Group accounting policies and provide clear insights that support strategic direction and decision-making at a subsidiary level.
As UK Business Finance Controller, responsibilities include:
- Financial Management & Control
- Take full responsibility for monthly management accounts, quarterly and year-end reporting.
- Lead and oversee the finance function, ensuring accurate reporting and strong variance analysis.
- Participate in business performance reviews, delivering clear insights into trends, risks, and opportunities.
- Budgeting & Forecasting
- Lead the preparation of forecasts, budgets and cashflow plans.
- Ensure alignment with overall financial strategy, business targets and Group requirements.
- Commercial Business Partnering
- Act as a strategic partner to the MD and senior leadership team.
- Provide insight on pricing, cost optimisation, profitability and investment decisions.
- Support key commercial and operational decision-making.
- Team Leadership & Development
- Lead, mentor and develop a small high-performing finance team.
- Set clear objectives, conduct appraisals and support professional growth.
- HR & People Oversight
- Serve as the primary HR contact for payroll, benefits and HR processes.
- Support recruitment, onboarding and employee development initiatives.
- Operational Continuous Improvement
- Drive process improvements across finance and operations.
- Enhancing efficiency, controls and reporting quality.
- Compliance
- Ensure compliance with UK accounting standards, all taxes (direct and indirect) and regulatory requirements, including import taxes.
- Lead the audit process and liaise with external auditors and Group Finance.
This role offers real influence, you won’t just report the numbers, you’ll help shape decisions. Working within a UK-international matrix, you’ll contribute directly to long-term strategy in a business with substantial growth ambition.
Ideally, you will:
- Be ACA / ACCA / CIMA qualified (or QBE with strong experience).
- Bring hands-on finance experience within an engineering or service-based environment, ideally in an international organisation.
- Have experience operating as part of a senior management team.
- Be an excellent communicator, able to influence and challenge senior leaders constructively.
- Demonstrate strong people-leadership skills, having led and developed finance teams.
- Be comfortable rolling up your sleeves while also operating at a strategic level.
- Be highly analytical with advanced Excel and systems skills and able to explain financial information to non-finance stakeholders.
- Have strong attention to detail and a commitment to financial integrity.
- HR experience would be advantageous.
