Athena Racing are expanding our technical team with the goal of winning the America’s Cup, the oldest international competition still contested in any sport. We are building an agile, creative and collaborative team to compete and win at the pinnacle of the sport of sailing. Our team values have a sharp focus on maximizing performance from our designs, while fostering a collaborative and supportive environment.
We are looking for a resourceful simulation and modelling engineer to join our simulation and modelling group, responsible for maintaining and developing our yacht model and the set of simulations it underpins. This model is key to our performance discovery process - it is used to define the design sensitivities that allow us to optimise the performance of the yacht, and is key in helping the sailors understand the physics of the yacht through its use in our simulator.
We’re hiring at different levels of experience, so whether you’re an early-career engineer with strong fundamentals or an experienced hand with deep subject knowledge, we’d like to hear from you.
Responsibilities- Drive the development of our computational boat model to be the best of its type, and support its integration in simulations and other decision support tooling.
- Develop and extend the fidelity of our boat model to meet the needs of stakeholders.
- Liaise with performance engineers, designers, fluid dynamicists and structural engineers to ensure validity of the model.
- Demonstrable academic accomplishment in a relevant field.
- Strong aptitude for physics, classical mechanics and mathematical modelling.
- Experience with the numerical treatment of mathematical dynamic and/or static models.
- Proficient coding skills. Particularly, ability to translate physical and mathematical models into code and to implement numerical schemes and solvers.
- Good communication and time-management skills.
- Knowledge of sailing physics is beneficial although not required for this role.
- Conversant with object-oriented programming, especially in Matlab and/or Python.
- Knowledge of modelling frameworks such as Modelica is a plus.
- Familiarity with optimisation methods and numerical optimal control.
