As a Senior Technician at Swansea Building Society Arena, you will be responsible for delivering high-quality audio, lighting, and technical services across a wide range of events. This includes live performances (music, theatre, comedy), conferences, and corporate events such as expos and banquets, with a bias as an audio engineer. You will support the setup, operation, and breakdown of technical systems and assist in the maintenance of all equipment across the auditorium, event spaces, and meeting rooms. When required, you will act as Duty Technician, overseeing load-ins, shows, get-outs, and leading efficient venue turnarounds, ensuring all installations are compliant with current legislation and venue requirements.

Working to a consistent high professional standard, the role involves providing high-level technical support and assistance to visiting clients and productions, while working closely with the venue team, to ensure smooth operations and uphold the safety and security of the venue, its staff, clients, and the public. Please note, your role may involve working with children or vulnerable people.

Key Responsibilities

  • To be a competent and reliable all-round Venue Technician (with an audio bias), where common duties are to rig, operate, install and oversee audio, lighting and other technical systems as required.
  • To provide lighting, audio, stage management and technical services, required by the users and hirers of Swansea Arena.
  • To assist with the general upkeep and day-to-day maintenance of the premises and report via the correct channels any aspect of maintenance which requires attention.
  • To assist the Management as part of the technical team with annual safety inspections and ongoing risk assessments of the premises.
  • To assist the management, supervising and leading the daily activities and turn-arounds of the department.
  • Supervise the activities of venue technician and casual technical staff, ensuring that all activities are delivered in a smooth and professional manner.
  • Assist in the recruitment and training of casual technical staff and assist with the management of breaks and welfare checks.
  • To ensure that all company policies are adhered to.
  • To assist in the supervision of all hirers and suppliers in accordance with their requirements.
  • To assist with the maintenance and safe storage of all related stage, auditorium, meeting room and plant equipment in accordance with current Health and Safety legislation.
  • To report to the Head of Venue Technical / Deputy Technical Manager any operational problems associated with the conditions of individual hirers’ contract documentation.
  • To act as Duty Tech on event days and to find solutions to any problems that may arise in an efficient and effective manner.
  • To liaise with Production / Tour Managers and conference organisers in the planning and management of all aspects of the event.
  • To be responsible for ensuring the completion of a pre-event check, identifying, and removing any security or health and safety issues prior to the arrival of patrons.
  • Supervise the work and conduct of personnel employed or contracted by the promoters whilst working at the arena, ensuring that safe working practices are adhered to and that the safety of those working in and using the arena is not compromised.
  • To produce post-event reports outlining any problems and the means of resolution.
  • Liaising with suppliers hired by the venue or productions/clients to ensure the arena fulfils its health and safety obligations and provides a good level of service to incoming tours & conferences.
  • To maintain clear communication with the box office team, with regards to show layouts and production requirements.
  • To communicate with stage door and where necessary offer support to collaboratively meet the needs of productions, clients and the venue.
  • To collect and complete risk assessments for events and technical related activities as and when required.

Essential

  • Previous professional experience in technical theatre and/or Music with experience of rigging/installing technical equipment systems.
  • Professional experience operating audio systems including live mixing/using digital systems.
  • Ability to fit up, operate and fault find sound equipment.
  • Excellent knowledge of lighting, audio, stage management and/or technical services.
  • Ability to interpret technical plans and documentation.
  • Good IT skills.
  • Good awareness of health and safety practices and electrical safety.
  • Strong customer service and people management skills.
  • Proactive and able to work independently, using initiative to solve problems.
  • Flexible, creative approach with artistic sensitivity.
  • Willingness to work: at height, in a low-light environment and in a noisy environment.
  • Ability to work long and unsocial hours, including nights and across a 7-day period.
  • Commitment to ongoing training and professional development.
  • A positive, flexible team player who supports the Arena’s objectives and vision.

Desirable

  • Ability to fit up, operate and fault find lighting equipment.
  • Experience of video systems.
  • Degree in a relevant subject or equivalent qualification.
  • Experience in supervision of staff or leadership of a team.
