Role Overview
As a Senior Technician you will report directly to the Technical & Buildings Manager and be responsible for the Casual Technicians working with the full‑time team, including Deputy Technical Manager, Assistant Technical Manager, Senior Technician (LX & SND Bias) and Technician. This role is based at Richmond Theatre and may require work or training at other ATG sites. Please note that your role may involve working with children or vulnerable people.
Responsibilities
- Ensuring standards of presentation on stage and throughout the building are top class.
- Ensuring technical equipment is regularly maintained, tested within its testing period and that relevant stock levels are suitable.
- Working closely with visiting companies to meet their technical needs economically and efficiently, ensuring compliance with contractual terms.
- Assisting in the maintenance of a Grade 2 listed building and keeping high standards throughout the venue.
- Representing the venues on fit‑ups and get‑outs and leading the technical crew.
- Working show calls on various departments to meet production requirements when required.
- Working regular evening and weekend hours, including get‑ins and get‑outs; payment for which is included in the annual salary. Time off in lieu can be taken by arrangement with the Theatre Manager/Director.
- In conjunction with the Technical and Buildings Manager to ensure a safe fit‑up and get‑out of all productions in accordance with the code of conduct.
- When required to lead a department during a get‑in and get‑out including LX, Sound & Stage teams.
- Providing an expectation to lead stage fit‑ups.
- Having a good background in Stage and Flys and being able to work interdepartmentally.
- Carrying out duties of show crew by providing safe and efficient operation of performances, including Stage, Flys, Sound Op, LX Op, Pyros and followspot where required.
- Acting as Duty Technician when required for performances, ensuring that venue operations are in place for the show.
- Adhering to all company health and safety procedures to minimise injury and accidents.
- Ensuring CDM (2015) regulations, risk assessments and method statements are properly implemented, both internally and by visiting companies in advance of get‑ins and get‑outs.
- Working with technical management and stage door supervisor to ensure producers, touring companies and contractors receive the highest standards of customer care.
- Ensuring fly floors, tool rooms and substage areas are maintained and ready for use.
- Undertaking stage and flys maintenance.
- Working alongside the Technical and Buildings Manager and Maintenance Supervisor to maintain the fabric of the Grade 2 listed building.
- Supporting the technical management team in training and managing the casual team’s performance to achieve business and departmental objectives.
- Ensuring ATG’s zero‑tolerance approach to bullying, racism, homophobia and transphobia is rigorously enforced, using informal counselling sessions to provide a safe environment.
- Attending training courses as required to further self‑development.
- Ensuring PAT testing and risk assessments are carried out regularly.
- Ensuring materials and services required by the technical department are costed and ordered in accordance with company policies, keeping expenditure within agreed budgets.
- Maintaining and implementing technical procedures and working practices, ensuring that all permanent and casual staff are up to date.
- Working with all private hires, filming and creative learning activities, including work experience when required, to maintain full technical support for a production.
- Working with colleagues in Customer Experience and Ticketing & Sales regarding wider operational impacts that may arise from production and technical decisions.
- Attending meetings as necessary to support the technical team.
- Ensuring any accidents or near‑misses are reported and dealt with in accordance with company policies.
- Leading and documenting CDM inductions and toolbox talks for visiting companies at the start of each phase of production.
- Writing and reviewing venue risk assessments.
- Helping to implement any new risk policy and procedures.
- Ensuring contractor management is maintained and efficient.
- Ensuring COSHH reports and MSDS are completed and up to date for all departmental chemicals such as haze fluid, paint and cleaning chemicals.
- Ensuring the highest standards of housekeeping in all areas of the venue.
