The Colonnade Bar Staff Role

As part of the team at the Colonnade Bar, you’ll report to the Events and Operations Manager. You’ll work closely with the Pub Supervisors operationally on shift to create the best environment for all our guests. All Colonnade Bar Staff roles are Zero-Hour Contracts with an expected availability of minimum 2-5 shifts per week. The number of shifts varies depending on the theatre’s programme and seasonal changes, and we will be very busy from Autumn to December. The Colonnade is also supported by several theatre teams including the Cellar Team, Customer Experience Team, Maintenance Team, Marketing Team and the Technical Team.

The Colonnade bar is a Grade II listed building in the heart of the city. In March 2024, the restoration of the Colonnade and the Theatre Royal was completed and the pub has since run both independently and alongside the theatre bars. It's a local’s favourite, known for our cosy atmosphere, unique aesthetic, seasonal cocktails and a variety of events.

Key responsibilities

• Greet and engage with the diverse audiences of Brighton, ensuring that they feel genuinely welcomed to the pub and treated appropriately as important and valued customers.
• Have a friendly and warm communication style and be able to interact with customers, from pub customers, theatre customers and visiting companies at the theatre.
• Proactively suggest and upsell products, adjusting your engaging and personable approach to the wide demographic of our customers.
• Know and understand our sales goals and work to exceed them.
• Maintain good bar procedures by completing daily checks and cleaning.
• Complete regular online and in-person training to be confident in all procedures.
• Work well with the pub and wider theatre team to ensure that we are operating at the highest standard.
• Have awareness of licensing objectives, Health & Safety, and Risk Procedures.
• Set up and close the pub, including restocking, furniture set up and cleaning.
• Proactively identify tasks which need to be done and take responsibility for completing them.

Essential

• Have a great work ethic and care about creating a warm and welcome environment for all customers.
• Have a flair for sales with a confident and friendly communication style.
• Be able to work well under pressure, especially when it is busy and there is a limited time frame to complete tasks.
• Genuinely enjoy interacting with others and working as a team.
• Be proactive in tasks and getting things done.
• Be community minded and have a great drive to promote the bar.
• Able to work daytimes, evening and weekend, especially on busy Friday and Saturday evenings.

Desirable

• Enthusiam and passion for the arts.
• Experience in Bar work or Pub work.
• Experience in a premium customer service role.
