Maintenance Role - Opera House, Manchester

As part of the Maintenance team, your line manager is the Head of Maintenance & Facilities.

You’ll work closely with the Maintenance team at the Palace Theatre and all staff across both venues.

The role will be based in the Opera House, which will be classed as your 'home/primary' venue, and you will assist the Maintenance Manager and Head of Maintenance & Facilities in the maintenance operations of your home/primary venue.

You will also be expected to work at the Palace Theatre as and when needed, dependent on the needs of the business, workload and staffing requirements.

As a key member of the team, you will assist both the Maintenance Manager at the Opera House, and the Head of Maintenance & Facilities, in the implementation, monitoring and cultural approach to workplace safety and compliance of the venue.

You will ensure that visiting productions, contractors and visitors are aware of and operate in compliance with ATG policies and procedures.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support contractor visits, ensuring work briefs are adhered to and appropriate inspections are carried out in a timely and effective manner.

It is the responsibility of the maintenance department to ensure that all appropriate paperwork is completed and understood, with permits issued and monitored where necessary, and thorough induction processes carried out.

  • Under direction from the Head of Maintenance & Facilities, oversee annual maintenance inspections for all areas where these are necessary, ensuring compliance with legislation and company practice, with the appropriate records kept.

This includes, but is not limited to, firefighting systems, water, air conditioning and pest control.

  • Undertake projects and maintenance tasks, ensuring they are completed to agreed timescales, to the highest possible standards and within agreed budgets.

Tasks will include decorating, plumbing, carpentry, and other tasks within the employee's skill base.

  • Assist the Maintenance Manager and Head of Maintenance & Facilities with larger projects that may be necessary for the upkeep and running of the building.
  • Maintain an overview on the general standard of housekeeping in the building. Report and action necessary works to ensure the highest standards of presentation possible.
  • Ensure the painting and decoration of the venue is maintained to a high standard, performing any repairs necessary in a manner suitable to the style and history of the building.
  • Undergo a daily and ongoing seat inspection, including making all necessary repairs and keeping comprehensive maintenance and repair records as required by Manchester City Council, venue management and ATG Entertainment’s risk team.
  • Work with other departments to enable them to maximise their effectiveness, including, but not limited to, creating point of sale displays or sales points for Front of House; fixing and fitting marketing materials where appropriate; working with the Back of House departments to upkeep the stage, orchestra pit and fly floor areas to the highest standard possible.
  • Ensure that all work is undertaken in a safe and appropriate manner, complying with best practice including licensing, fire, conservation, and Health & Safety legislation and guidance.
  • Complete a monthly maintenance inspection with the Maintenance Manager, looking at all aspects throughout the building to ensure that the highest standard is attained at all times, addressing any issues that arise in a timely manner.
  • Complete and submit incident reports, near miss reports and accident reports to venue management as and when they occur, via the current reporting system.

Essential

  • Proven hands-on maintenance experience and knowledge (carpentry, plumbing, decoration etc..)/
  • Experience of day to day building and facilities maintenance.
  • Working knowledge of the implementation of safe systems and developing a safety culture to comply with the Health & Safety at Work Act.
  • Ability to use own initiative and have a pro-active approach to problem solving.
  • An organised, methodical approach to work.
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills.
  • Good IT skills, being proficient in Word, Excel and Outlook, and having the ability to learn new software and systems.
  • Ability to work under pressure.
  • A 'can-do' attitude and a positive, flexible approach to the job role, work colleagues and peers.
  • A strong project delivery focus and a genuine desire to deliver an excellent result, every time.
  • Willing to work flexible hours including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and Bank Holidays.

Desirable

  • Technical or recognised trade qualification in a relevant discipline.
  • First Aid trained.
  • Previous Working at Height training.
  • Previous Manual Handling training.
  • Experience and understanding of building services, systems and issues faced by old buildings.
  • Previous experience of working with contractors.
  • Knowledge and maintenance of heating, venting and air conditioning systems (HVAC).
  • Experience of the management of Health & Safety at Work in an environment comparable with a theatre or entertainment venue.
