The company
Our client is a leader in providing engineered solutions to the energy and renewable energy sectors, including those in Hydrogen, Carbon Capture and waste energy.
Their team designs and fabricates a variety of mechanical components, including structural supports, heat exchanges, housing enclosers, exhaust systems, ventilation and ducting.
The UK arm of the business currently employs around 30 members of staff, with 50% of the team being design and projects engineers.
Internationally, the company employs over 800 members of staff, largely across their manufacturing sites in Europe.
As a business they are experiencing growth and a consistent large volume of incoming projects globally within growing industries, which has seen their turnover grow from £30 million in 2018 to £80 million in 2023.
The Role
They’re now seeking an experienced Lead Project Engineer to take ownership of engineering delivery across high‑value projects typically ranging from £500k to £4 million.
This is a key position within the business, where you will be the focal point for all engineering activity on a project. You’ll lead the design, analysis, and coordination of multidisciplinary engineering work, ensuring projects are technically robust, compliant with design codes, and meet customer expectations.
You won’t be producing 3D models or drawings yourself, instead you’ll guide and review the technical work produced by others, lead client meetings, and ensure engineering quality from concept through to delivery.
Your responsibilities will include
- Lead all engineering activities on assigned projects from enquiry through to delivery
- Coordinate and check the work of design engineers and CAD teams (UK & Czech Republic)
- Act as the main technical point of contact for customers, leading design and review meetings
- Ensure design integrity and compliance with ASME VIII and EN 13445 standards
- Perform and review hand calculations, pressure loss, thermal and structural analysis
- Interpret customer datasheets and specifications to define functional and technical requirements
- Produce engineering documentation, reports, and calculations to support design and manufacture
- Liaise with third‑party inspection and notified bodies as required
- Support sales and estimating teams with enquiry design input at bid stage
What we’re looking for in a Lead Project Engineer
- Degree‑qualified mechanical engineer (or equivalent)
- Minimum 8 years’ experience within mechanical design, ideally in energy, oil & gas, or power generation sectors
- Strong knowledge of pressure vessels, air handling systems, or large fabricated equipment
- Hands‑on experience reviewing technical specifications and performing hand calculations
- Understanding of ASME and EN design codes
- Excellent communication skills – confident leading technical discussions with clients
- Proactive, organised, and comfortable taking full ownership of engineering delivery
- Right to work in the UK and full driving licence
