About the Role
SMS Mining Services is seeking an experienced and strategic General Manager – HSET to lead and enhance our Health, Safety, Environment, Training and Injury Management function across our operations. This opportunity has arisen following an internal promotion, reflecting our commitment to developing and advancing our people. Reporting directly to the Chief Operating Officer, this is a critical leadership role responsible for driving a high‑performance safety culture, ensuring legislative compliance, and supporting operational excellence across the business.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership
- Develop and execute the HSET strategy aligned with the organisation's vision, objectives and growth plans.
- Provide trusted advice and guidance to the Executive Leadership Team on HSET risks, opportunities and emerging industry trends.
- Embed a culture of accountability, leadership and proactive risk management across all levels of the business.
- Be a visible and credible leader across all SMS operations.
Safety, Compliance & Risk
- Lead the ongoing evolution of safety and environmental management systems to achieve best‑practice standards.
- Ensure compliance with all applicable legislation, regulations, standards and client requirements.
- Oversee critical risk management frameworks, assurance activities and governance processes.
- Champion learning‑focused incident investigations and the implementation of effective corrective actions.
- Champion the internal SMS Injury Management process.
Capability & Performance
- Drive training and workforce competency strategies to ensure operational readiness and compliance.
- Lead and develop a high‑performing team of HSET professionals through coaching, mentoring and succession planning.
- Monitor organisational performance through meaningful reporting, data analysis and key performance indicators.
- Identify and implement opportunities to enhance HSET performance, workforce engagement and operational effectiveness.
Stakeholder Engagement
- Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, regulators, industry bodies and key stakeholders.
- Represent SMS Mining Services as a credible and influential HSET leader within the mining and resources sector.

What We’re Looking For
You are a respected HSET leader with extensive experience operating within mining, contracting, resources or heavy industry environments.
- Demonstrated success in a senior HSET leadership role.
- Strong knowledge of WA mining legislation and industry best practice.
- Proven experience leading multi‑disciplinary HSET teams.
- The ability to influence and engage leaders at all levels of an organisation.
- Strong strategic thinking and commercial acumen.
- Experience developing and implementing company‑wide safety and training initiatives.
- Exceptional communication, stakeholder engagement and leadership skills.
- Relevant tertiary qualifications in Health and Safety, Environmental Management or a related discipline.
