Astute Peoples Power team are working exclusively with Encompass Digital Media, a global technology provider who operate a relay station and power station located in the Ascension Islands. This unique opportunity is responsible for overseeing the operation and maintenance of the relay station, power plant and supporting assets which provides Southern Africa with the BBC World News Service. The Islands generating station comprises of 5 diesel engines, five wind turbines, four reverse osmosis plants and 8 liquid storage tanks. In the near future they are looking at installing battery storage systems and solar panels to further reduce their reliance on diesel generation.
Responsibilities and duties of the Station Manager role:
- Responsible for the safe and effective management of the islands Relay and Power Station including staff and families.
- Ensuring compliance with contractual obligations and SLAs.
- Acting as Technical Authority for all engineering matters across Electrical, Mechanical, RF, Water and Power issues.
- Overseeing all legislative requirements including compliance with H&S Act 1974, COSHH, PUWER, EAWR, LOLER, Working at Height etc.
- Act as the client lead representative on the Island working with key stakeholders including Relay Customer, Local Government, Military Forces as part of a wider island Forum.
- Support with wider engineering issues such as Root Cause Analysis, Failure Mode Effect and Criticality Analysis.
- Involved with the ongoing development of island staff.
- Responsible for budget management.
Professional qualifications we are looking for someone with the following:
- Ideally educated with a HNC / HND in an Electrical or Mechanical Engineering field.
- At least five years management experience.
- Prior working experience in a power station or similar heavy engineering process plant.
- IOSH or NEBOSH qualified would be advantageous.
- Qualified as a HV SAP.
Personal skills:
- Familiar with budgets and commercial decision making.
- Able to act as an ambassador.
- Able to support and coach staff at varying technical abilities.
- Capable of living on a remote island with a lack of home comforts.
