Baker Sulphur & Fertilizer to recruit for a Process Operator to join their well-established sulphur processing facility in Southampton, Hampshire. The vital Process Operator role comes with a basic salary of c.£38,000 per annum + c.£4,000 shift allowance + overtime + bonus + a highly attractive pension scheme. The working hours will be Monday - Friday split shifts including 6am - 2pm and 2pm - 10pm; however, this could vary depending on operational demands of the site, including the requirement to work on weekends.

Responsibilities and duties of the Process Operator role:

  • Reporting to the Operations Manager you will be responsible for carrying out daily operational activities to meet sulphur production and loading targets safely, efficiently, and in line with operational requirements.
  • Adhere to all site procedures and standards, including health, safety, environmental, permit-to-work, isolation, manual handling, working at height, emergency response, and hazardous substance management protocols.
  • Monitor drivers, contractors, and visitors to ensure compliance with the site's safety management system, reporting any breaches or unsafe practices to the line manager without delay.
  • Operate, inspect, and maintain plant equipment and control systems to ensure reliable and efficient process performance.
  • Collect process samples and monitor gauges, instruments, and control indicators to verify that equipment and processes are operating within specification.
  • Accurately complete and maintain operational records, monitoring logs, and data reports within the required schedules and frequencies.
  • Identify process abnormalities, implement and document corrective actions, and promptly report equipment defects, spills, odour incidents, near misses, accidents, or other unsafe conditions.
  • Perform routine housekeeping, cleaning, and first-line maintenance activities in accordance with established procedures, escalating any issues to the line manager as necessary.
  • Support maintenance teams by assisting with breakdown repairs when required to minimise operational downtime.
  • Assist in supervising subcontracted maintenance activities and verify that process equipment is safe to use before returning to operation.

Professional qualifications:

  • A full UK driving licence is a necessity for this role due to the working hours.

Personal skills, prior experience and knowledge:

  • The Process Operator role would suit someone who has prior experience working in a process engineering environment such as Oil and Gas, Refineries, COMAH sites, Waste Management or FMCG.
  • The role would also be suitable for Navy/RAF/Army Engineers who are leaving the forces or have prior experience in the forces.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Flexibility in working shifts which will include weekend work or call out in rare cases.
  • Ability to work from heights.
