About this role
Astronomer is building the next generation of developer tooling for data teams. Our products sit at the center of how modern organizations author, test, deploy, and operate data pipelines, increasingly across ML and AI-driven workloads.
As a Senior Product Designer, you will play a critical role in shaping how data engineers, analytics engineers, and emerging Airflow users interact with Astro. You will work on complex, high-impact problem spaces that span IDE experiences, workflow orchestration, and platform usability, partnering closely with product managers and engineers to translate deep technical constraints into clear, intuitive user experiences.
You will own design for one or more core product areas end to end, from early problem framing and discovery through to detailed execution and iteration in production. The work is meaningful, technically challenging, and highly visible, with a direct impact on customer adoption and developer productivity.
We are looking for a senior designer who is comfortable operating across levels, someone who can zoom out to reason about systems and product strategy, and zoom in to craft thoughtful interactions, flows, and interfaces. This is a role with significant ownership and influence.
You do not need to have worked in every technical domain we touch today. We value designers who are curious, collaborative, and motivated to grow their technical depth over time, in close partnership with product and engineering. You will work closely with our product and engineering teams, collaborating regularly across time zones.
What you get to do:
- Own end-to-end design for complex product areas, from discovery and concepting through to high-fidelity execution and shipped outcomes.
- Partner closely with product managers and engineers to shape product direction, define scope, and make thoughtful trade-offs grounded in user needs and technical realities.
- Design workflows and interfaces for highly technical users, balancing power, flexibility and approachability.
- Lead user research and discovery efforts, synthesizing qualitative and quantitative insights into clear design decisions.
- Contribute to and evolve Astronomer's design systems, patterns, and interaction standards to support scale and consistency.
- Use data, experimentation, and customer feedback to iterate on designs post-launch and improve outcomes over time.
- Clearly communicate design rationale and decisions to cross-functional partners and leadership.
- Help raise the overall bar for product design craft, collaboration and quality across the team.
What you bring to the role:
- 5+ years of experience as a product designer on complex SaaS or platform products, or equivalent impact across fewer years.
- Experience designing complex, end-to-end product experiences for developer tools, technical platforms, or adjacent problem spaces, with curiosity and willingness to engage deeply with technical concepts.
- Ability to independently own problem spaces and drive design work from ambiguity to execution, while actively partnering with product managers and engineers.
- Strong product thinking, with a track record of balancing user needs, business goals and technical constraints.
- High craft in interaction design, information architecture, and visual design, demonstrated through thoughtful problem-solving, clear decision-making, and well-executed interfaces.
- Comfort collaborating closely with engineers, including discussing trade-offs, constraints and implementation details.
- Clear and thoughtful communication skills, with the ability to explain design rationale and influence cross-functional partners.
- A user-centered mindset grounded in empathy, curiosity and continuous learning.
Bonus points if you have:
- Experience designing for data engineers, analytics engineers or other developer-first audiences.
- Familiarity with workflows involving data pipelines, orchestration, IDEs or infrastructure tooling.
- Experience working in fast-growing or early-stage product organizations.
- Experience contributing to or evolving design systems at scale.
- Comfort collaborating with globally distributed teams.
