Astro Education are seeking a resilient and committed Group Lead to join a new Alternative Provision Academy supporting learners with SEMH needs in Stoke-on-Trent. This Group Lead role offers a fantastic temp-to-perm opportunity for someone experienced in SEMH environments, Alternative Provision, or working as a SEN Teaching Assistant, who is ready to take the next step into group leadership.

About the Role

As a Group Lead, you will lead a KS3 cohort of learners with SEMH needs, many of whom require consistent emotional, behavioural, and academic support. You will be responsible for creating a safe, structured environment that enables learners with SEMH challenges to re-engage with education. Working closely with SEN Teaching Assistant staff, you will ensure learners with SEMH needs receive tailored support to help them make progress both academically and personally. This Group Lead position is ideal for someone confident supporting SEMH learners and collaborating effectively with SEN Teaching Assistant teams.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead a KS3 group of learners with SEMH needs within Alternative Provision
  • Work collaboratively with SEN Teaching Assistant staff to support learning and behaviour
  • Provide consistent pastoral care for students with SEMH challenges
  • Implement behaviour strategies tailored to SEMH needs
  • Support SEN Teaching Assistant colleagues in delivering personalised interventions
  • Promote engagement, resilience, and positive outcomes for SEMH learners
  • Contribute to reintegration planning where appropriate

About You

We are looking for a dedicated Group Lead with strong experience supporting SEMH learners and working alongside SEN Teaching Assistant professionals in similar settings. You should have:

  • Experience in Alternative Provision, PRU, or SEMH environments - Desirable (SEN Experience essential)
  • Background working as a SEN Teaching Assistant or in a similar support role
  • Strong understanding of SEMH needs and behaviour management approaches
  • Ability to support and lead SEN Teaching Assistant staff effectively
  • A calm, consistent approach when working with SEMH learners
  • A passion for improving outcomes for young people with SEMH challenges
