About BBOWT:
BBOWT is the largest voluntary organisation in the region dedicated to protecting wildlife and restoring nature across Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire. Working as part of the wider network of 46 Wildlife Trusts across the UK, BBOWT manages 85 nature reserves, delivers education and community programmes, and leads campaigns to drive nature’s recovery. The Trust is committed to creating bigger, better and more connected spaces for wildlife, with an ambitious goal of ensuring 30% of land across the three counties is managed for nature by 2030. Through collaboration with local communities, landowners, councils and partner organisations, BBOWT works to create a wilder future where both people and nature can thrive.
The Role:
Reporting to the Land Management and Ecology Director, this is a key role taking responsibility for the professional management of BBOWT’s property and land portfolio. The successful candidate will ensure all leases, licences, acquisitions and disposals comply with the Charities Act and deliver best value in support of the Trust’s conservation objectives. They will provide strategic advice to the Trustees and senior leadership team on estate opportunities, valuations, legal compliance, and the long-term land-use strategy across the portfolio. Responsibilities will include property and estate matters such as tenancy negotiations, conservation grazing agreements, and capital project support, balancing legal, financial and ecological considerations to enhance biodiversity alongside operational and financial sustainability.
Person Specification:
- Chartered Member of Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS Rural) or another equivalent professional organisation.
- Knowledge and experience of estate management, land and property acquisition, valuation and disposal work in the rural environment.
- Experience of UK legislation relating to rural property and an awareness of the Charities Act.
- Ability to prepare both annual and project budgets and present analysis of risk and liability.
- Able to lead multifunctional project teams.
- Excellent communication and negotiation skills.
- Comfortable working independently as well as part of a team.
- A keen eye for detail, with an organised and methodical approach.
