We are seeking a Pathology and Sample Manager to join our Translational Pathology group within the Oncology R&D Cancer Biomarker and Translational Medicine divisions. Accountabilities
Support the operation of the Translational Pathology UK group by assisting leadership with delivery of cancer biomarker portfolio goals.
Coordinate with leadership team to manage contract workers including contract pathologists.
Assist implementation and proper use of the department\’s laboratory information management system.
Draft and update standard operating procedures, work instructions, scoring sheets.
Maintain up-to-date laboratory staff and contractor training and proficiency records.
Manage and ensure the portfolio management system (Smartsheet) is current.
Review department purchasing and accounts to ensure team remains within annual budget allocation.
Manage cross‑charging activities across the portfolio.
Design and support improvements in scientific or operational approaches and technologies to enhance project quality, efficiency and effectiveness.
Contribute to strategic planning and preparation of proposals and business cases.
Serve as a resource by sharing expertise within and beyond Translational Medicine and Cancer Biomarker Development departments.
Collaborate with other functions ensuring effective communication.
Ensure compliance with Good Clinical Practice, Safety, Health and Environment standards and all relevant internal AstraZeneca standards and external regulations.
Generate working instructions and SOPs in line with GCP standards.
Act as sample owner for commercial human biological tissue samples under the team’s remit.
Procure high‑quality human biological tissue and manage storage and usage, building a repository to support our pipeline.
Essential Skills / Experience
- PhD with exposure in a relevant field.
- PMP certification or equivalent project management experience/training.
- Strong previous pharmaceutical industry experience.
- Experience in histology techniques or working with pathologists.
- Experience in project management including using project management software such as Asana or Smartsheet with a demonstrated track record of success in delivering projects on‑time and on‑budget.
- Strong organizational skills including good time‑management skills. Must be highly organized and able to work independently on multiple tasks in a fast‑paced environment.
- Takes appropriate initiative and accountability including proactively prioritizing work in alignment with business requirements.
- Experience handling the outsourcing and management of outsourced projects.
- Experienced in using MS Office Suite especially PowerPoint, Word and Excel.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Familiarity with human tissue tracking software or LIMS.
Desirable Skills / Experience
- Knowledge of immunohistochemistry (brightfield or fluorescence) microscopy and carrying out biomarker quantification studies using digital image analysis software.
- Knowledge in one or more AZ portfolio areas: tumour drivers and resistance, DNA damage response (DDR), immuno‑oncology (IO), antibody drug conjugates (ADC) and epigenetics.
- Some experience or exposure to microscopy and digital image analysis with software such as HALO or Visiopharm.
- Functional knowledge of FDA Code of Federal Regulations Title 21 Parts; Good Clinical Practice for Laboratories; any AZ processes and policies involved in relation to the acquisition, receipt, storage, use and disposal of human tissue samples.
- Familiarity with cell culture and interpreting genomics and RNA sequencing data.
