Introduction to role
Lead the Serious Injury and Fatality (SIF) prevention and Process Safety programs within Global Sustainability and Safety, Health and Environment (SHE) for AstraZeneca. Establish strategy, influence stakeholders, and drive engagement with functional leadership to deliver successful implementation throughout the company!
Accountabilities
- Inspire and influence stakeholders within Operations, Commercial, and Research & Development to identify, mitigate and manage high-risk activities with a focus on task elimination and hierarchy of controls.
- Continually improve processes and embed changes globally for process safety activities and high hazard tasks including but not limited to hot work, confined space, hazardous energy control, machinery safety, line breaking, electrical safety, and working at height.
- Establish minimum expectations and best practices globally through standards, procedures, and networks.
- Implement innovative solutions and technologies that advance company and industry process safety impacts.
- Support technology and systems that promote safe operation and change management.
- Build effective networks within and external to AstraZeneca to advocate and implement technical solutions.
- Challenge the status quo and advocate for change to remove ‘normalization of deviation.’
- Collaborate with Human and Organizational Performance Lead to promote robust, honest, and blameless reporting processes.
- Foster and model psychological safety.
- Develop leading metrics to ensure technical solutions are effectively prioritized.
- Support incident investigations with technical knowledge and drive continuous improvement throughout the enterprise.
- Assist the SHE Audit Director to confirm SIF and Process Safety program assurance.
- Drive continuous improvement in SIF/Process Safety competency, develop and deliver training to uplift the organization.
- Partner with Global Engineering to ensure safety in design for capital projects throughout the project lifecycle.
Essential Skills/Experience
- Ability to influence strategically to obtain desired outcomes while maintaining positive relationships.
- Proven ability to build relationships with and influence key stakeholders.
- Comprehensive knowledge of Process Safety and High Hazard legislation.
- Competent in risk analysis techniques: PHA, What-if, Bow Tie analysis, LOPA etc.
- Practical knowledge of hazardous area classification and requirements for electrical and mechanical equipment in hazardous areas.
- Managing high-risk work programs.
- Proven leadership skills and demonstrated ability to motivate and empower others.
- Mastery of Safety, Health, and Environment with an ability to lead cross-functional working groups and teams.
- Demonstrated ability to set and manage priorities, resources, performance targets, and project initiatives in a global environment.
- Willingness to travel both domestically and internationally.
Desirable Skills/Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering, Science or Business-related field.
- Professional Business Qualification/Certifications.
- Effective problem and conflict resolution skills and proven team focus.
- Experience of leading a Safety, Health and Environment team and working in a global environment.
- Familiarity with the latest research and thinking.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills as well as proven negotiation, collaboration, and interpersonal leadership skills.
- Experience interacting with regulators.
