AstraZeneca are seeking a highly skilled analytical scientist to work in our Oncology Targeted Delivery (OTD) team. Based at The Discovery Centre in Cambridge, you will be an integral member of the analytical team focusing on the rational design of assays involving biological matrices and analytical methods required to study linker payloads and antibody drug conjugates (ADCs). ADCs and related scaffold conjugates are among the fastest growing drug classes in oncology.
Responsibilities
- Independently design, execute and validate assays using LCMS techniques to monitor stability of small molecules and ADCs.
- Carry out studies to elucidate mechanistic insights relevant to ADC project biological results.
- Build and maintain state of the art MS & HPLC analytical methods for ADC and payload analysis and train others in their use and interpretation.
- Act as a subject matter expert as part of a multi‑disciplinary project team to support achievement of projects goals.
- Work independently within a team and collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders to ensure the efficient relay of information.
- Be involved in the interpretation of data with little or no guidance with a clear understanding of its implications within drug discovery and its ongoing utility for predictive modelling.
- Maintain a well‑developed understanding of analytical techniques, both internally and externally, as applying a broader functional knowledge to support the team.
- Regularly share relevant external published papers with peers.
- Perform routine HPLC‑MS based QC analysis of small molecules, ADCs and other types of biologic modalities.
- Ensure own work, and the work of others, is performed in accordance with appropriate Safety, Health & Environment (SHE), quality and compliance standards, e.g. Good Laboratory Practice (GLP).
Essential for the role
- Ph.D and/or M.Sc in Chemistry, Biochemistry or relevant Analytical Science discipline.
- B.Sc in above disciplines with extensive experience with LC‑MS, HPLC and assay development.
- Experience with QTOF or Orbitrap or relevant MS instruments.
- Hands‑on experience in bioanalysis and LC‑MS/MS for measurement of proteins, small molecules, and impurity profile identification.
- Experience in development and application of quantitative bioanalytical methods of proteins.
- Deep understanding of chemistry and protein biochemistry.
- Strong multi‑tasking, time management and organisational skills.
Desirable for the role
- Experience with other analytical technologies (e.g., SEC‑HPLC, HIC‑HPLC, CAD) and lab‑based automated liquid handlers.
- Experience with programming languages such as R, Python and familiarity with databases.
- Understanding the process of successful drug discovery/drug development.
- Experience with handling sample extraction from biological matrix and automated process set up.
- Experience with assay set up to monitor the stability of Linker payloads or ADCs in the presence of biologically relevant enzymes.
