Job Description

Working on a major nuclear power plant project, the Surveillance Team is crucial to the successful delivery of the project, coordinating and managing surveillance activities, interfacing directly with the project's contract partners and internal stakeholders to provide assurance of the work performed on the construction site. As part of this team, the Welding Superintendent has a particular responsibility for the works carried out in the following areas:

  • Welding
  • Non-Destructive Testing
  • Heat treatment
  • On-site assembly and manufacturing of mechanical components
  • Stainless steel surface integrity
  • Pressure testing

You will report to and act under the responsibility of the Surveillance Team Lead. You may also be required to support other parts of the Project team from time to time. They will work with the wider project site surveillance team, the quality department and the construction delivery team to ensure coordinated and effective surveillance solutions are delivered for the project. The scope of work on project will be split among a number of Construction Superintendents depending on resourcing and requirements.

Principal Responsibilities:

  • Delivery of the welding surveillance of aforementioned activities across site.
  • The line management of their team covering:
    • Performing in-situ supervision to sign-off the competence of surveillance resources;
    • Briefing, coaching and supervising the team’s activities;
    • Allocation of work within their team to ensure the on-time delivery of deliverables required to meet the Project needs;
    • Implementation of proper controls to ensure the quality of the work delivered;
    • Promotion of safety across their team;
    • Reporting on the team’s scope of activities;
    • Setting and cascading objectives through to the team;
    • Monitoring and assessing any direct reports in the team;
    • Direct management of contracted staff including liaising with the relevant contract technical lead;
    • Professional development of team members.
  • Contributing to the development, implementation and monitoring of the processes, procedures, instructions, etc. applicable to surveillance activities including the incorporation of Operational Experience (OPEX) where applicable;
  • Implementing plans for the management of co-activity on the site to ensure safety at all levels;
  • Contributing to risk workshops and identifying risks within their scope.
  • Contributing to relevant constructability reviews to ensure welding and NDT efficiency opportunities are identified and pursued.
  • The timely monitoring and reporting of discrepancies detected through audits or inspections;
  • Promoting and enforcing the safe delivery of all aspects of the project at all times. To this end, the Construction Superintendent (Welding) will be a staunch advocate of our Safety culture, and help to embed this approach in all processes and activities undertaken on the project.
  • Proactively communicating with other site teams to maintain good communication links, and ensure activity and relevant outcomes are reported in a timely manner.
  • Contributing information to weekly and monthly reports.
  • Supporting work to mitigate delays and keep works safe and within quality standards. Following up by taking appropriate and proportionate action (e.g. issue communications, call meetings) to avoid the halt of works.
  • Ensuring clear, two-way communication with Line Manager so that all activity is directed appropriately;
  • Assist with forecasts for the team with a view to upcoming site activities (planning 6 months to a year in advance).

Qualifications

Knowledge & Skills

  • Working knowledge of relevant British & European standards, construction and design codes/guidelines such as RCC-M, ASME.
  • Detailed knowledge of the documentation used in safety critical construction and fabrication environments such as Inspection and Test Plans, End of Erection Status Reports etc.
  • Strong communication skills in English required, knowledge of French can be an advantage.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Essential
    • A welding inspector qualification (e.g. CSWIP 3.1 or equivalent) as well as a basic ‘appreciation of NDT’ qualification.
    • The successful candidate will demonstrate significant experience (>10 years) working in the fields of metallurgy, welding and NDT.
    • Significant experience in weld inspection on large construction projects.
  • Desirable
    • Higher level qualifications in both welding (CSWIP 3.2, IWS etc.) and NDT (PCN or equivalent) would be desirable although are not essential for the fulfilment of this role.
    • Experience in large power plant design, manufacture and construction.
    • Good working knowledge of Quality Management practices, methods and processes.
    • Experience in the fabrication and installation of pressure systems.
    • Depending on the scope covered, experience in structural steel, welded pre-fabrication of reinforcement cages and civil/mechanical interfaces is desirable.
