As an Electrical Engineer in the Fusion and Modular Nuclear (FMN) unit, you design and verify electrical systems for nuclear facilities, supporting new builds, upgrades, and decommissioning. You will collaborate with EC&I, control, mechanical, and safety engineers to ensure safe, compliant integration across the lifecycle. The role focuses on delivering reliable electrical solutions that meet nuclear safety requirements in a regulated environment. Responsibilities
- Design electrical systems and create wiring diagrams, load schedules, routing, earthing and equipment specs.
- Produce design documentation including calculations, protection schemes, coordination studies, panel designs and installation drawings.
- Interpret and apply nuclear safety requirements to support reliability and defence in depth.
- Conduct power system studies (load flow, fault level, discrimination, arc flash as needed).
- Select appropriate electrical equipment (LV/MV switchgear, transformers, UPS, motors, drives) for nuclear environments.
- Ensure designs comply with BS EN 61508, BS 7671, IEC 60364 and site-specific nuclear requirements.
- Collaborate with EC&I, control, mechanical, civil, and safety engineers for seamless interface.
- Support control systems' electrical aspects (power supplies, segregation, EMC, environmental qualification).
- Participate in design reviews, HAZOPs, failure mode analyses and substantiation activities.
- Support manufacturing, FAT, SAT and commissioning with issue resolution and traceability to requirements.
Key requirements
- Proven electrical engineering experience in regulated, safety-critical sectors (nuclear, defence, or energy).
- Strong understanding of electrical distribution systems, protection principles and installation best practices.
- Experience delivering core electrical deliverables (SLDs, cable calculations, equipment specs, protection settings).
- Familiarity with nuclear design expectations (safety classifications, redundancy, segregation, qualification).
- Knowledge of key UK and international standards (BS 7671, IEC/BS EN, ENA docs).
- Excellent communication and collaboration in multi-disciplinary projects.
