Join the Fusion and Modular Nuclear Business Unit! Reporting to the Balance of Plant Lead, the Senior Mechanical Engineer shall be responsible for developing a fluid system. The Senior Mechanical Engineer shall work closely with multi-disciplined teams and the supply chain to help deliver the system design.
Your mission:
- Lead Fluid System Development: Manage a small team to develop fluid systems.
- Review Design Documents: Develop and review Process Flow Diagrams, Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams, Layout Drawings, Component Sizing Calculations, Datasheets, and Specifications.
- Conduct Optioneering: Lead and review optioneering studies, Decision Record Files, Design Descriptions, and Requirement Specifications.
- Apply Systems Engineering: Develop and review Functional and Design Requirements using Systems Engineering principles.
- Integrate System Design: Ensure the fluid system design integrates seamlessly into the wider power plant.
- Provide Technical Support: Act as the technical contact for interfaces and stakeholder activities.
- Support Design Reviews: Participate in Design Reviews and HAZID/HAZOP studies with multidisciplinary teams.
- Liaise on Safety: Collaborate with the safety team on nuclear safety licensing, environmental planning/permitting, and related interface activities.
- Ensure Compliance: Adhere to statutory H&S policies, project quality, and safety rules.

- Industry Experience: Background in nuclear, thermal power, oil and gas, or other highly regulated sectors.
- Fluid Systems: Experienced in fluid system design development.
- Design Phases: Proficient in roles covering FEED to detailed design and EPC delivery.
- Procurement: Skilled in developing procurement specifications and collaborating with suppliers.
- Technical Expertise: Strong technical background in thermal power or similar projects.
- Communication: Excellent communication skills for engaging with stakeholders.
- Project Management: Ability to identify and manage critical interfaces on major projects.
- Safety & Standards: Knowledgeable in UK Health and Safety regulations, safety systems, HAZOP, and engineering standards.
- Codes & Standards: Familiar with ASME, European, and UK codes and standards.
- Systems Engineering: Experience or awareness in Systems Engineering is a plus.
Personal Specification/Attributes:
- Results-Oriented: Independent, proactive, and results-focused team player.
- Organization: Strong organizational skills, handling confidential nuclear information professionally.
- Education: Bachelor’s degree or Higher National Diploma in engineering.
- Professional Registration: CEng in a relevant discipline or working towards it.
- Security Clearance: SC Clearance or ability to achieve it.
