With over 55 years’ experience, Assystem supports clients throughout the full project lifecycle, from strategy and design through to construction, commissioning and operation. Within Assystem, the Environment, Consents & Engagement (ECE) Practice provides specialist environmental, sustainability and stakeholder expertise to major projects across the UK. The team supports clients in securing and maintaining environmental consents, managing environmental risk and ensuring compliance during construction, while also helping to integrate sustainability requirements into project delivery in a practical and proportionate way. Assystem is currently supporting the delivery of High Speed 2, one of the UK’s most significant transport infrastructure projects.
We are seeking an experienced Environmental Manager to lead the development, implementation, and continual improvement of environmental management systems across complex construction and infrastructure projects. This role is responsible for ensuring compliance with environmental legislation, regulatory requirements, permits, licences, and company standards while driving a proactive environmental culture and high levels of environmental performance throughout project delivery.
Key Responsibilities- Lead the implementation, maintenance, and continual improvement of the Environmental Management System (EMS), ensuring alignment with BS EN ISO 14001:2015 requirements.
- Develop, review, and update environmental procedures, management plans, standards, and guidance documents to ensure compliance with legal, client, and organisational requirements.
- Establish robust environmental governance processes, monitoring compliance and driving continual improvement across all project activities.
- Lead environmental audits, inspections, and compliance assessments, ensuring findings are effectively managed through corrective and preventive actions.
- Provide expert advice and guidance on environmental legislation, regulatory obligations, permits, licences, and emerging environmental requirements.
- Monitor environmental performance, analyse trends and key performance indicators, and prepare reports for senior management and client stakeholders.
- Lead environmental incident investigations, root cause analysis, and lessons learned processes to prevent recurrence and improve performance.
- Manage regulatory engagement and support interactions with environmental authorities, clients, and other external stakeholders.
- Oversee the implementation of environmental risk assessments and ensure environmental risks and opportunities are effectively identified and managed.
- Provide leadership, coaching, and technical support to environmental teams, promoting consistency and best practice across projects.
- Drive environmental awareness, competence, and culture through the development and delivery of training programmes and engagement initiatives.
- Coordinate specialist environmental disciplines including ecology, waste, water, air quality, noise and vibration, and contaminated land, ensuring effective integration into project delivery.
- Support business assurance activities, including management reviews, external audits, certification audits, and compliance reporting.
- Extensive experience managing Environmental Management Systems within construction, infrastructure, engineering, industrial, or regulated environments.
- Strong knowledge of UK environmental legislation, permitting regimes, and environmental compliance requirements.
- Demonstrable experience maintaining and improving ISO 14001-certified management systems.
- Experience planning and leading environmental audits, inspections, and assurance programmes.
- Strong understanding of environmental risk management, compliance frameworks, and performance reporting.
- Proven ability to develop environmental procedures, standards, and governance processes that drive operational excellence.
- Excellent stakeholder engagement and influencing skills, with experience working across multidisciplinary teams and senior leadership groups.
- Strong analytical, organisational, and problem-solving abilities with a continuous improvement mindset.
- Degree qualified (or equivalent) in Environmental Management, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv) and/or membership of a relevant professional body such as IEMA, CIWEM, CIEEM, ISEP, or ICE.
- Lead Auditor qualification (ISO 14001) desirable.
