Peterborough City Council is seeking skilled and motivated Democratic Services Officers to join our Legal and Governance Directorate and play a key role in supporting effective, transparent and lawful decision‑making across the Council.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide high‑quality committee and governance support to elected Members, senior officers and external partners.
  • Responsible for agenda planning, convening and supporting formal meetings, issuing agendas, recording proceedings, and producing accurate minutes, decisions and recommendations for Council, Cabinet, regulatory and scrutiny committees.
  • Provide clear, confident and impartial governance and constitutional advice, often in politically sensitive environments.
  • Support the implementation of the Council’s Constitution, help resolve complex procedural issues, maintain committee work programmes, and ensure full compliance with statutory and constitutional requirements.
  • Contribute to member and officer training and keep abreast of legislative developments and best practice in democratic governance.

Qualifications

  • Strong experience of committee administration.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • High level of attention to detail.
  • Able to analyse and interpret legislation, manage competing deadlines, and work flexibly to support meetings outside normal office hours.
  • Experience of local government decision‑making and committee management systems is essential.
