Hackney is one of Britain’s most exciting and fastest-changing boroughs. We are rebuilding Hackney with our diverse communities and are seeking an enthusiastic governance professional to help shape how governance is delivered across the Council.

Responsibilities

  • Administering committee meetings, creating and publishing agendas, minuting meetings and producing decision notices
  • Supporting elected Members and organising Member development events and briefings
  • Webcasting meetings

You will play a vital part in supporting a small team to deliver an effective and transparent governance service that enables Members, officers and residents to engage in the decision making process.

Qualifications and skills

Previous governance experience is not essential but would be beneficial. You will need good IT skills to support hybrid meetings and to use and maintain systems such as Modern.Gov. You should understand the Council’s Constitution and statutory provisions relating to local authority meetings, and be confident in advising Members of formal council meetings and decision-making processes. You should have strong communication and organisational skills to prioritise work and meet legal and constitutional deadlines. The ability to understand complex documents, extract key points and summarise them is important. Training is provided for governance-specific activities.

Additional information

This post is politically restricted under the Local Government and Housing Act 1989, meaning you are unable to hold an active political role. The role is located near the Hackney Town Hall campus, with a requirement to work flexibly from the office and attend evening and late-night meetings.

We value diversity and inclusion and welcome applicants from all backgrounds. Flexible working is supported. Hackney Council is committed to eliminating discrimination and disadvantage and welcomes disabled applicants.
