Job Description

I’m Vik Measuria and I own The Eyecare Group — four independent practices, one of which is Ryley & Evans in Long Eaton. I’m looking for a dispensing optician to run it, and in time to own part of it.

Let me start with the ownership, because it’s the part that matters most and the part most likely to be misread. I wouldn’t promise a share of the business to someone I’ve never met, and I don’t think you’d believe me if I did. What I can tell you is that it’s genuinely there — we’d sit down properly at three years and talk about it, and it would come down to what you’d built by then rather than time served.

On the practice itself: Long Eaton is a single site and you’d be running it rather than covering it. Which ranges we stock, how patients are looked after, the team on the floor, the monthly numbers. The bonus is uncapped and pays on the practice growing year on year, so if you build it up you see it.

The admin that usually comes attached to a manager’s title doesn’t come with this one. Product catalogue, pricing, VAT schemes, systems and reporting are all handled centrally now — that was a deliberate decision and it’s already in place, so whoever runs the practice gets to be an optician and a manager rather than an administrator.

I should be straight about where things stand. The team is small — an optometrist, a front of house colleague, and locum dispensing cover — and the practice has been held together rather than led. There’s a lot of room in it for the right person.

Three Things Really Matter

• You’re a GOC-registered dispensing optician
• You’ve led people before, in some form — a team, a store, a shift, a project
• You can get to Long Eaton

On the second one: what I’m really after is judgement. Someone who can read a team, handle an awkward patient or a supplier who’s let you down, and knows where the hard part of running a practice actually sits. That usually comes from having done it rather than from a job title, so I’m less interested in what your last one said than in what you’ve actually had to sort out.
