The Marine Engineer will be responsible for ensuring that all maintenance and defect rectification work is completed on the port’s fleet of vessels. This includes planned maintenance, reactive breakdown support, emergency repairs, and coordination with contractors across a varied and demanding marine environment. You will work on pilot boats, survey vessels, workboats and patrol boats, ensuring all maintenance is completed in water and in line with safety, operational and regulatory requirements. Travel will be required to support vessels across multiple sites, including Gosport, with a company van provided.
Key Responsibilities
- Carry out maintenance and defect rectification work in a safe, diligent, and timely manner, supporting port and HES operational requirements.
- Respond to breakdowns and emergency situations both during normal working hours and while on call.
- Work with the Maintenance Manager & Team Leader to identify upcoming maintenance requirements and repair needs.
- Support and collaborate with third party contractors when completing maintenance and repairs.
- Complete all work orders accurately to maintain vessel asset history and records.
- Communicate effectively with internal departments during servicing, repair activities and vessel downtime.
- Organise plant, labour and materials as required to efficiently undertake maintenance tasks.
- Assist in the review and development of risk assessments and safe systems of work.
Skills, Experience & Qualifications
- Strong knowledge of Health & Safety legislation and process safety.
- Marine Engineering qualification (ONC/HNC or equivalent) with a mechanical bias and experience in a marine engineering environment.
- Proven experience in maintenance and fault-finding.
- Strong problem-solving abilities.
- Good communication skills and ability to engage with colleagues at all levels.
- Customer focused and proactive in approach.
- Full UK driving licence.
Working hours
Monday to Friday, typically 07:30–16:00 (Monday–Thursday) and 07:30–15:00 on Fridays, the role also includes a 24/7 on-call rota with an additional payment.
