Our Humber region is the UK’s largest port industrial cluster, comprised of four ports handling over 10% of the UK’s seaborne trade, with over 30,000 shipping movements per year. This activity is supported by our Marine team, which is seeking a Dock Master with a strong marine technical background to join the team. You will manage marine operations within the ports, taking specific responsibility for one port within the region. You\’ll also lead on port development projects across all four ports, ensuring safe, efficient, and cost-effective delivery. You should have prior involvement with developing port-based or similar infrastructure projects and provide marine technical expertise. Managing a team of 5 Assistant Dock Masters, you\’ll have strong management capabilities with experience of coaching and developing staff while maintaining exceptional standards of safety.

Accountabilities Of The Role

  • Discharge the duties of Dock Master for the Statutory Harbour Authorities areas as defined in the appropriate legislation.
  • Act as the departmental lead for port development projects and marine infrastructure, providing appropriate marine technical expertise and ensuring safety of navigation risk management.
  • Liaise with the Operations function on port requirements, incidents, and other operational activities.
  • Monitor the implementation of the Marine Safety Management System to ensure compliance with legislation, ABP Marine Policy, and the Company’s Health, Safety, Environmental and HR policies.
  • Take operational responsibility for serious marine casualties or incidents and investigations, including liaison with the HSE / MCA / MAIB.
  • Maintain regular liaison with Dock users, adjacent Harbour Authorities, and regulatory authorities.
  • Support the preparation, monitoring and execution of the departmental capital and operational cost budgets.
  • Manage, develop, and train marine staff ensuring they have sufficient knowledge to operate independently.

Skills & Experience

  • STCW II/2 Master or Chief Mate qualification, or alternative qualification such as UK Harbour Master Certificate, with appropriate experience.
  • Senior level experience in port management or managing a statutory authority.
  • Experience of port development projects.
  • Experience managing marine environmental matters and knowledge of marine consenting regimes.
  • Thorough knowledge of modern risk-based safety management techniques and marine and H&S legislation.
  • Ability to balance commercial and operational requirements and facilitate continuous improvement.
  • High standard of communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Strong planning and organisational skills, with a proactive approach to problem-solving.
  • Full Driving Licence.
  • Experience in marine accident investigation, incident management, and emergency planning (Ideal).
  • Experience liaising with regulators, statutory bodies, and other key stakeholders (Ideal).
