Associated British Ports (ABP), the UK’s leading port operator, is seeking a proactive and safety-conscious Assistant Dock Master to join our team at the Port of Goole. This is a fantastic opportunity to play a key role in the day-to-day operations of one of the country’s most historic inland ports. You’ll need to be able to work 12 hour shifts of 2 days, 2 nights then 4 days off.
Key Responsibilities:- Plan, control and facilitate the safe movement of vessels within the Port of Goole, ensuring compliance with by-laws, statutory requirements, and regulations.
- Maintain an up-to-date marine activity plan using PAVIS.
- Fulfil statutory Harbour Authority duties in line with ABP’s Marine Safety Management System (MSMS).
- Exercise delegated powers of the Dock Master in accordance with MSMS.
- Coordinate vessel berthing and in-port requirements with VTS, customers, and Assistant Operations Managers.
- Liaise with pilots, PECs, terminal operators, and other stakeholders to ensure safe marine operations.
- Supervise marine staff, ensuring adherence to safety procedures and relevant legislation.
- Respond to and manage emergency situations until relieved by a Senior Duty Manager.
- Investigate and report on incidents, accidents, and pollution events, coordinating clean-up operations as necessary.
- Act as Authorised Person for issuing permits and permissions.
- Proven marine operational experience.
- Strong understanding of statutory, regulatory, and safety responsibilities.
- Effective leadership and communication skills.
- Knowledge of the Port Marine Safety Code and associated best practices.
- Familiarity with port operations and emergency plans.
- Ability to make decisions under pressure and solve problems effectively.
- Willingness to work shifts and travel to other Humber ports if required.
- Proficient in computer use and documentation.
- STCW, UKHMA/Lloyds Harbour Master, LPS or VTS 103 qualifications.
- Experience in marine incident investigation and line management.
- Safety qualifications such as IOSH Working Safely or NEBOSH H&S Certificate.
- VHF qualification and clean driving licence.
- Initiative, flexibility, and reliability.
