Do you want to work with the 15th fastest-growing startup in Europe? If so, you’re in the right place. AssetCool is one of Europe’s fastest-growing startups, building the fastest path to more power on the grid. We’re tackling one of the most urgent challenges in the global energy transition: grid congestion. Electricity demand is rising fast; driven by electrification, AI and data centres. While traditional grid upgrades take years, demand exists today. The grid isn’t ready.
AssetCool delivers robotic grid upgrades that physically increase the capacity of existing transmission lines by up to 30%, without rebuilding infrastructure. Using advanced robotics and proprietary photonic coatings, we unlock data-centre-scale capacity in weeks to months, not years and at a fraction of the cost and disruption of conventional approaches. Our technology goes beyond capacity. We reduce losses, prevent corrosion, cut corona noise and generate high-value operational data that supports smarter grid operation and maintenance. Our systems are already deployed globally, and we just raised a big funding round from leading energy and climate investors. AssetCool is one of the most innovation-driven companies in the UK energy sector and we’re scaling fast! If you’re ambitious, mission-driven and excited to work on real deployments that strengthen the industry that really matters, AssetCool is where you can make it happen.
Role Overview
We are seeking a hands-on Mechatronics Engineer with solid experience across mechanical design, system integration, and prototyping. You will work across the full product lifecycle, from concept development and analysis, through prototyping and testing, to preparing systems for field deployment and production. This role is ideal for an engineer who enjoys building real hardware, solving complex interdisciplinary challenges, and working in a fast-paced startup environment. The role includes regular travel and field-based work to support system trials and operational deployments.
Key Responsibilities
- Contribute to the design and development of mechatronic and robotic systems for outdoor, real-world operation
- Develop mechanical components, enclosures, and assemblies using CAD (SolidWorks, Fusion 360, etc.)
- Build and test prototypes using 3D printing, machining, and other rapid-fabrication methods
- Support system integration across mechanical, electrical, and embedded software domains
- Conduct testing, debugging, and performance evaluation in both lab and field settings
- Work with suppliers and manufacturing partners to prepare designs for production and assembly
- Provide technical input into design reviews and cross-functional discussions
- Mentor junior and graduate level engineers
Required Skills & Experience
- Degree in Mechatronics, Mechanical, Electrical/Electronic Engineering, or a related discipline
- 3 - 5 years of relevant engineering experience (robotics, automation, machinery, or similar)
- Strong CAD proficiency with experience in mechanical assemblies
- Practical experience with prototyping tools and processes (3D printing, machining, laser cutting)
- Understanding of sensors, actuators, and system-level architecture
- Familiarity with embedded systems and basic programming (C/C++ or Python)
- Excellent problem-solving skills and willingness to work hands-on in a dynamic environment
Preferred Skills & Experience
- Experience with ruggedised or outdoor/industrial system design (IP ratings, vibration/thermal considerations)
- Exposure to FEA, simulation, or systems modelling (e.g., MATLAB, Simulink)
- Understanding of real-time control, motor control, or robotics frameworks
- Experience with embedded Linux platforms (Jetson, Raspberry Pi, etc.)
- Knowledge of GPU optimisation, computer vision, or sensor fusion (CUDA/OpenCL, OpenCV)
Why Join AssetCool?
- Work on groundbreaking technology revolutionizing the power grid.
