About AssetCool
AssetCool is one of Europe’s fastest-growing startups, building the fastest path to more power on the grid. We’re tackling one of the most urgent challenges in the global energy transition: grid congestion. Electricity demand is rising fast; driven by electrification, AI and data centres. While traditional grid upgrades take years, demand exists today. The grid isn’t ready.
AssetCool delivers robotic grid upgrades that physically increase the capacity of existing transmission lines by up to 30%, without rebuilding infrastructure. Using advanced robotics and proprietary photonic coatings, we unlock data-centre-scale capacity in weeks to months, not years and at a fraction of the cost and disruption of conventional approaches. Our technology goes beyond capacity. We reduce losses, prevent corrosion, cut corona noise and generate high-value operational data that supports smarter grid operation and maintenance. Our systems are already deployed globally, and we just raised a big funding round from leading energy and climate investors. AssetCool is one of the most innovation-driven companies in the UK energy sector and we’re scaling fast!
Role Overview
As the High Voltage Systems Engineer, you will be our internal subject matter expert for all high-voltage requirements and experimental designs. You will play a pivotal role in ensuring that our robotic and drone platforms are not only functional but fully live-line capable. You will lead the design of proof-of-concept experiments for our coatings and robotic systems, providing critical design input to ensure our technology operates safely and reliably in energised high-field environments.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and lead rigorous proof-of-concept testing for AssetCool coatings and robotic platforms to validate performance in high-voltage environments.
- Provide expert design input to the robotics and drone engineering teams to ensure platforms meet dielectric and clearance requirements for live-line operations.
- Influence the physical design of robotic systems, including shielding, component placement, and material selection to mitigate EMI/EMC and electrical breakdown.
- Work closely with the Application Engineering team to validate that new materials and robotic subsystems can withstand the electrical stresses of the global power grid.
- Lead technical coordination with external HV laboratories for specialised testing, including corona discharge, flashover, and insulation resistance.
- Establish and maintain internal HV testing safety protocols and ensure all product designs comply with international utility standards (e.g., IEEE, IEC).
Required Skills & Experience
- A Degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, or a related field with a clear specialization in High Voltage.
- 5+ years of experience in high-voltage engineering, focusing on experimental design and hardware validation.
- Deep understanding of insulation coordination, dielectric strength, and the requirements for working on energised (live) conductors.
- Proven track record of designing custom test setups and rigs for electrical stress and performance validation.
- Practical knowledge of overhead line (OHL) infrastructure and the electrical environment of high-voltage transmission and distribution.
- Ability to communicate complex electrical constraints to mechatronic and software engineering teams.
Preferred Skills & Experience
- Experience with electric field modeling software (e.g., COMSOL, Ansys Maxwell) to predict electrical stress points.
- Previous experience integrating high-voltage protection into robotic systems or UAV platforms.
- Familiarity with FMEA and Root Cause Analysis for electrical failure modes.
- Knowledge of global utility standards and certification processes for grid-deployed hardware.
Why Join AssetCool?
- Work on groundbreaking technology revolutionizing the power grid.
- Fast-growing startup with significant industry traction and large-scale projects.
- Collaborative, innovation-driven team with exciting career growth opportunities.
- Competitive salary, and flexible work options.
