Technical Project Manager - Gloucester HQ | Hybrid, 3 days a week in the office | £55,000 | Permanent
A growing group business is looking for a hands-on Technical Project Manager to join its IT team in Gloucester. Reporting to the IT Director, you’ll run IT projects from start to finish.
The group grows partly through acquisition, so bringing newly acquired businesses onto its systems and infrastructure is a regular part of the role, alongside a wider programme of infrastructure, cloud and business systems projects.
The IT team is lean. You won’t have a large project office or a bench of engineers to hand work to; you’ll own your projects, roll your sleeves up when needed and see the results of your work quickly. Clear communication matters here; you’ll set the rhythm for how project progress is shared across the business.
Who this suits:
- An experienced Technical Project Manager who still enjoys getting into the technical detail
- An infrastructure or cloud engineer who has already been leading projects and wants project delivery to be the main job
What you’ll be doing:
- Planning and delivering IT projects from requirements through to handover
- Getting hands-on with configuration, testing and deployment, rather than just coordinating others
- Gathering and documenting business requirements, building project plans and managing milestones
- Writing test plans and running testing groups with users
- Acting as the main point of contact for stakeholders, and keeping everyone clear on where every project stands at any given time
- Holding colleagues and suppliers to account for what they’ve committed to
- Managing third-party suppliers, including scoping, quotes and delivery against agreed outcomes
- Managing project budgets, tracking cost savings and reporting progress to leadership
- Working within ITIL change and service transition processes
- Handing projects over to support teams with full documentation and training
- Improving how projects are run and sharing knowledge across the team
What you’ll need:
- 3+ years in IT project management or a technical delivery role
- A track record of delivering infrastructure, cloud or systems projects from requirements to handover
- Enough technical depth to do real work on your projects, not just manage them
- Strong communication skills and a track record of keeping stakeholders properly informed
- The confidence to hold people to account, including those you don’t directly manage
- Experience managing budgets and reporting to senior stakeholders
- Experience working within ITIL-aligned change management
- A solid grasp of project methodology (PRINCE2, Agile, Waterfall or hybrid); a formal qualification is welcome but not essential
Useful but not essential:
- Microsoft 365 and Azure experience; this is the main environment, but strong technical PMs from other platforms will pick it up
- Microsoft certifications such as AZ-900 or MS-900
- Experience integrating acquired businesses or running migrations
If you’re a PM who likes staying close to the technology, or an engineer ready to make the step into project management, we’d like to hear from you. Apply with your CV and we’ll be in touch.
