We are seeking a substantive, full-time consultant gastroenterologist with a subspecialty interest in Bowel Cancer Screening and advanced therapeutic colonoscopy.
You will join a team of thirteen gastroenterologists at West Herts Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust who work well together and provide a supportive environment.
You should have a CCT in gastroenterology and general medicine, with experience of working within the NHS. A particular interest in advanced colonoscopy is essential, with the goal of completing accreditation for Bowel Cancer Screening, and involvement in the management of complex polyps and EMR.
The BCSP team currently has two consultants and three nurse endoscopists and needs further expansion to meet the FIT80 program. The BCSP team is highly regarded regionally; the last regional QA visit stated the unit was ‘a high performing bowel screening unit with outstanding leadership’.
The EMR service is currently served by a consultant gastroenterologist and a nurse endoscopist. A local complex polyp MDT occurs weekly, with a further weekly link with St Marks to discuss more complex, high co-morbidity patients or ESD referrals.
There will be an opportunity to be trained in colonic stenting.
This post has 10 programmed activities.
There is a 1:12 on-call rota for ‘consultant of the week’ inpatient cover and a 1:12 overnight on-call for GI bleed.
We are looking for the prospective candidate to start as soon as possible.

The post-holder will be expected to contribute to the smooth running, governance, and further development of the BCSP and EMR service including roll out of FIT80, audit on EMR KPI outcomes, audit for unit PCCRCR and leading the yearly LGI clinical governance meetings. Participation in Complex Polyp MDTs and the CRC MDT is required. The Department is a JAG approved Training Centre and the post holder would be asked to participate in the local JAG colonoscopy training courses.
In addition:

  • Maintain appropriate CPD
  • Endoscopy (Elective, training, and inpatient emergency)
  • Outpatient work (clinics, referral vetting, GP advice and guidance)
  • Inpatient work (Consultant of the week to cover GI ward, Ward referrals, ED in reach)
  • Weekend work (8 hours on site ward and emergency endoscopy)

You will be expected to be able to travel to all 3 Trust hospital Sites (Watford General Hospital, Hemel Hempstead Hospital and St Albans Hospital).
You will take part in clinical governance and clinical risk management, and in their implementation, including audit.
A personal discussion and visit to the department are strongly encouraged.
