On behalf of our client, a rapidly growing and highly innovative automation systems integrator, we are looking for an ambitious Graduate / Junior Design Engineer to join an expanding engineering team.

Our client specialises in designing and delivering bespoke automation solutions that help manufacturers across a wide range of industries improve productivity, quality, and efficiency.

As a Graduate / Junior Design Engineer, you will bridge the gap between academic theory and physical, real-world machinery design.

You will receive structured hands-on training, dedicated mentorship, and the opportunity to develop your technical knowledge while contributing to diverse engineering projects across the full lifecycle—from initial concept through to manufacture, installation, and commissioning.

NB: (Robotics / Programming experience is NOT necessary.

KEY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES Supported and mentored by a senior design team, you will be actively involved in the day-to-day execution of engineering projects across both the design office and the assembly floor:

  • Bespoke 3D Design: Assisting with the design of bespoke mechanical components, structural fixtures, and automated cells using Solid Works.
  • Technical Documentation: Producing accurate 3D CAD models, detailed manufacturing drawings, assembly layouts, and creating/maintaining Bills of Materials (BOMs).
  • Project Support: Working directly alongside established Design Engineers throughout the development process, managing engineering documentation and design records.
  • Hands-on Prototyping: Assisting with physical prototype builds, testing phases, and implementing continuous design improvements.
  • Shop-Floor Collaboration: Liaising closely with manufacturing and assembly teams to ensure designs are practical, cost-effective, and fully manufacturable (DFMA).

Learning: Actively developing your knowledge regarding advanced pneumatic/vacuum integration, sensor placement, and modern industrial automation best practices.

QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE, SKILLS AND ATTRIBUTES Essential

Criteria

  • Education: A Degree (or expected degree) in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Product Design, Manufacturing Engineering, or a highly relevant engineering discipline.
  • CAD Capability: Strong foundational experience using Solid Works and confidence in producing 3D CAD models, assemblies, and detailed engineering drawings.
  • Attributes: A proactive attitude with a willingness to learn and develop rapidly within a fast-paced engineering environment.
  • Core Skills: Strong problem-solving skills, excellent attention to detail, and a genuine enthusiasm for innovative technology.
  • Communication: Good communication skills and the ability to work effectively as part of a collaborative, multi-disciplinary team. Desirable Criteria (A Distinct Advantage):
  • A university placement year or industrial internship completed within an engineering or manufacturing business.
  • Practical knowledge of core manufacturing processes such as machining, fabrication, or sheet metal work.
  • Familiarity with basic engineering calculations and mechanical design principles.
  • A strong professional interest in special purpose machinery, smart manufacturing, or modern automation systems.

DETAILS OF PACKAGE Up to £30,000 PA (Depending on experience) + Benefits / 39 Hour week: 8 to 5 Monday to Thursday / 8 to 1 Friday (Some flexibility around core Hours (by agreement)) / Good training and career development opportunity with a strong, established and growing business. / Fuel allowance for staff commuting in excess of 40 miles per day
